Your Role in achieving this will be as our Director of R&D

Factorial is looking for a Director of R&D who will be responsible for Factorial’s next generation material and cell chemistry. The successful candidate will assume a research and development for new cell chemistry joining Factorial’s team in Woburn, Massachusetts. Responsibilities include managing multiple cell material teams, each of which is responsible for developing a new chemistry, and material for handoff to cell product.  Duties for this position include defining the cell chemistry and ensuring that the cell achieves all requirements. The preferred candidate will have a track record of R&D for next generation cell chemistry, an understanding of Tier-1 automotive, the battery industry, as well as the research community.  The candidate will also have a history of leading and developing strong teams of scientists and engineers.


  • PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or related field of study.
  • 10+ years of experience in a material development role, especially electrolyte and anode surface design with lithium metal or anode free. Proficiency in the lithium metal or ion battery cell product & process a plus
  • 5+ years in a management role
  • Demonstrated record of launching new material into product successfully
  • Proven track record of success in bringing projects to fruition
  • Willingness to execute on multiple tasks in a fast-paced start-up environment
  • Ability to work within project teams and with customers with dedication and technical excellence

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not restricted to:

  • Lead the team members to design and develop the next generation chemistry
  • Lead the new material development with an experience in electrolyte design including solvent, salt, additives, polymer and analysis
  • Lead the new material development with an experience in anode surface design to meet the customer requirement
  • Provide expertise for formal root cause analysis to create mitigation plan for the design and improvement
  • Demonstrated record of technical innovation, including publications, presentations, and/or patents
  • Design, validate, and analyze lithium secondary battery for continuous improvement to processes and equipment
  • Provide scientist support to project teams to resolve quality issues
  • Collaborate and communicate with internal customers directly on cell development
