Who You Are
A highly motivated individual who shares an interest in natural resources and environmental planning with 2 to 7 years work experience and solid skills in GIS, cartography, spatial analysis, and data management. This position’s main responsibilities include supporting large multi-disciplinary project teams with GIS-based solutions, including developing and maintaining geospatial datasets, preparing high quality map products for print and web-based presentation, supporting field data collection applications, preparing impact analyses, reports, geodatabases and GIS-based web applications. You would work closely with other GIS analysts, scientists, and project managers to provide spatial data products and services to clients and staff.
You have completed coursework in GIS, geography, computer science, environmental planning, or other related studies and have 2-7 years of relevant professional experience. You demonstrate up to date knowledge and high standards for cartographic design, visual communication, and data accuracy. Attention to detail is essential, as is the ability to collaborate and communicate with a variety of colleagues and clients. You have skills and experience with ESRI ArcGIS Pro software including ArcGIS Online development of web-based applications and curating authoritative data for publishing online. Knowledge of California natural resources, city and county datasets is preferred.
You are an independent, self-directed problem solver capable of working in a fast-paced environment, meeting deadlines and responding to the immediate needs of clients. Prior experience in a consulting role is advantageous, but not required.
Experience using Python or R packages to streamline and automate workflows and access data using API’s is a big plus, including using Jupyter Notebook ArcGIS integration. Familiarity with AutoCAD and graphic design software (Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator), analyzing and visualizing data in Tableau or PowerBI, or using other mapping and open-source GIS applications are also desirable.
You are available to work hybrid from one of our Northern California offices in Sacramento, Oakland, Petaluma, San Jose, or San Francisco. Candidates located elsewhere in California will also be considered. All candidates must be fully available to work during ESA’s Pacific Time business hours.
What You Will Do for ESA
As a GIS Analyst, you will have the opportunity to learn and contribute to projects ranging from wetlands, water quality and other biological resources protection and restoration, to large infrastructure planning and construction, to climate change adaptation, housing and energy system development. Your primary duties will include data compilation, curation and management, support for mobile data collection, spatial analysis, cartographic design and development of web maps and applications. You will work closely with ESA biologists, hydrologists, planners, engineers, cultural resources specialists, and other scientists. You will also possess strong organization and communication skills to support project teams in incorporating technological solutions into project design, tracking scope and schedule for your assignments and ensuring your work is delivered on time and within budget.

For this position, the range is approximately as listed based on our anticipated hiring locations as noted in the above job details. Actual compensation is determined by several factors including but not limited to an individual’s related experience, education, skills, and the city in which the applicant lives.
