Envato Then & Now
Our story starts in 2006 with three founders in a Sydney garage. Born from a desire to earn a living doing what they loved, with the flexibility to do it from anywhere, Envato set out to create an online community for buying and selling creative digital assets. Nearly 13 years later, we’re profitable and still totally bootstrapped. This allows us to stay experimental and totally focused on the best interests of our authors & customers around the world.
We’ve built marketplaces where anyone can buy and sell the creative assets they need to complete their projects faster. Our community can now buy millions of different kinds of assets on Envato Market, or subscribe to the #1 unlimited subscription service for creatives, Envato Elements. Every day, these products help everyone from freelancers to small business owners and agencies get their creative projects done.
While we are known and loved within the digital professional community globally, where our authors have earned over $850 million, we also want to be a place where anyone can Make with Envato. Alongside Market & Elements, our portfolio also includes Milkshake, a website builder for Instagrammers, Placeit, a smart template tool for logos, mockups, graphic design & more, Mixkit, for free stock footage and animation, and most recently, Twenty20, a stock-photo subscription service.
What you’ll be doing
As the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Envato, you will be leading a department that has grown significantly to meet the challenge of delivering world-class web applications at scale. The role will oversee the strategy, culture, delivery and reliability of the technology function, from IT and platform systems through to delivery of product work in three countries.
Envato’s new CTO will begin the position with the benefit of a strong legacy of architectural sophistication and a strong reputation of contribution to the technology community in Melbourne and globally. There will be significant scope to continuously improve the tech team’s customer-centric culture together with the product and UX functions. We’re doing a lot of things well, but we also know that there is always room to dial up the technology team’s focus on results and delivery as we continue to scale across many products, systems and countries. The CTO will be accountable for defining how we do this, while also carrying on strong cultural practices of systems thinking and risk management.
As Chief Technology Officer, you will also navigate exciting but complex organisational dynamics. With Envato’s second largest office in Mexico, you will be the technical leader responsible for building bridges between the Australia and Mexico teams, ensuring that our products and people adopt ways of working that best align with our values and purpose as we support the global creative community to “make with Envato.” As a member of Envato’s executive team (referred to internally as NAV), the CTO will collaborate with other senior leaders to contribute beyond the tech function to Envato’s overall strategy.
What we’re looking for
- A great commercial lens for how tech can pragmatically be applied to create business results
- A demonstrated record of integrity and people focused leadership that embraces diversity and cultural differences
- A track record of leading large (100+) successful, commercial, technology functions
- Be super smart and able to strategically navigate through complexity
- Be a great communicator, able to communicate complicated problems into simple solutions
- Be able to coach, lift and lead the tech teams
- A personally humble and collaborative style that can foster strong relationships with other executive leaders
We care deeply about diversity and inclusion at Envato, and welcome applicants of all types, and from all backgrounds. If you think you have the skills and experience needed for this role then we'd like to hear from you.
Please submit a cover letter, an up to date copy of your resume. Good luck!
