EF is headquartered in San Francisco, CA, and our more than 70 staff members are based in locations throughout the Midwest, Northeast, Southeast, and Western regions where they can best serve our programs, partners, operations, and other functions.

 
POSITION SUMMARY

In collaboration with the Senior Vice President, Programs and the Vice Presidents of the National Program and States and Regions Program, the Director of Program Operations (Director) works with the Program Team and cross-functional colleagues to ensure consistency in the operational management of EF program activities. The Director will interact with the Program Team, which executes on strategic planning and grantmaking; the Operations Team, which comprises Finance, Human Resources, IT, and Grants; and the Strategic Partnerships Team, which cultivates and maintains funding partnerships and also manages risk and communications for the organization. Housed within the Program Team are the National Team, focused on implementing national strategy, and the States and Regions Team, which focuses on deploying place-based campaigns at the state, and regional levels. This position plays a key role in ensuring strategically aligned, consistent, and equitable grantmaking and program implementation. 

The Director's primary responsibility is to create, manage, and enhance the processes, tools, and systems to support and improve EF programs. In this new role, the Director functions as a change agent and plays a critical cross-functional leadership role, engaging internal leaders and stakeholders to ensure the creation and implementation of unified, efficient, and effective grantmaking and program management. In addition, as a member of the EF's Program Leadership Team, the Director will be a trusted facilitator and advisor providing guidance on established operational practices and the development of consistent accountability systems, tracking, and grantee reporting.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 

Budgeting and Planning 

  • Work across organizational functions, especially with the Operations team, to develop and coordinate effective grantmaking processes, tracking, and impact metrics.
  • Keep program and cross-functional leadership informed on progress and projections, and highlight unexpected changes in budget and program plans. 
  • Lead the National and States and Regions teams’ annual planning processes. 
  • Manage a Programs-wide calendar in collaboration with Program team leadership Operations, and Strategic Partnerships to highlight organizational timelines and develop a more comprehensive picture of program-wide work. 
  • Assist the Senior Vice President, Programs and Finance to ensure effective allocation, reconciliation, and implementation of budgets. Tracks budgets in collaboration with Finance and Strategic Partnerships. Prepares a monthly report for the Management team. Flags issues early and troubleshoots as needed. 
  • Liaise with Program operations on all program-related contracts, FIPS, and other external agreements to ensure accuracy and consistency, and to address potential conflict of interest issues—in collaboration with Strategic Partnerships—as they emerge. 

Support Process Development Implementation and Ongoing Improvement 

  • Oversee the development of continuous improvements to ensure quality control, consistency, and seamless program operations and systems. 
  • Lead the development, implementation, and management of consistent program policies, procedures, and practices.
  • In consultation with cross-functional leaders and teams, partner with Grants in developing effective standard operating procedures around grantmaking, accountability, and grantee reporting.  
  • Partner with Grants, Strategic Partnerships, and Programs to develop internal dashboards that provide reliable and useful data related to grantmaking.
  • Serve as the Program partner to the Strategic Partnerships team to coordinate the collection of information and tracking progress for program strategy evaluation and funder reporting. 
  • Work with and troubleshoot Program operations with external consultants, as needed.

Leadership and Supervision

  • Serve as a member of the Program Leadership Team. Serves as the lead facilitator for the Program Leadership Team, if required.  
  • Lead, supports, and supervises a cross-functional team of program managers, coordinators, and associates.  
  • Operate as a facilitator and advisor within Program leadership to enable consistency of practice, where needed.
  • Work closely with the Management Team and Operations, coaching EF leadership through the implementation of effective organizational processes and practices.

  • Generate and implement ideas for systems, program, and operational improvement.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues. Contribute to a positive working environment. 
  • With assistance from the supervisor and others, formulate your own learning and development plan. Identify and seek out professional development opportunities, including networking, informational interviews, training, projects, etc.
  • Recognize that we are stronger when we are diverse and inclusive, and embody these values in internal and external EF work.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A minimum of 12 years of professional experience that includes significant management experience of both personnel and systems in the nonprofit advocacy space.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in U.S.-based strategic work relevant to the climate effort, such as clean energy, politics, democracy, justice, business engagement, health, organizing, etc.
  • Demonstrated executive-level experience in management and strategic decision-making, preferably in a complex, multi-site, and multicultural organization.
  • Experience participating in or leading DEI initiatives. A demonstrated commitment to contributing meaningfully to a workplace where equity and inclusion are core values in our internal and external EF work.
  • A commitment to operational excellence, with a strong appreciation for quality systems.
  • Demonstrated experience managing large teams and supporting personal growth of all employees.
  • Solutions-oriented, collaborative problem-solver who is committed to working collaboratively in a diverse, dynamic, and complex environment with a combination of local, regional, and national staff and partners.
  • Self-directed with sound professional judgment and an ability to work effectively and efficiently (both virtually and in-person) with minimal supervision. 
    Strong interpersonal and communications skills. Proven ability to build collaborative relationships, operate in a team environment, and honor donor intent.

Preferred, but not required

General knowledge of project management applications and grantmaking systems (Salesforce and MS Office applications).
Knowledge and interest in clean energy, climate, or environmental advocacy. 
Experience with the philanthropic, NGO, coalition,policymaking, or advocacy communities.

SUPERVISION
  • Reports to the Senior Vice President, Programs and supervises 3–5 employees.

 

COMPENSATION

This is a full-time position. The target salary for this position is $180,000 for candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area, and $158,400 for national candidates in other areas. EF provides a comprehensive benefits package, including competitive salary, medical, dental, vision, disability, and retirement benefits and paid time off.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

EF is a remote-first work environment. Employees have the option to work remotely, or in our offices in San Francisco, Washington, DC, or Raleigh, NC.

The office environments include some shared workspace, some individual offices, shared kitchen facilities, with moderate noise levels and a collegial atmosphere. On occasion, there are activities or events after work hours.
