The Role

The Staff Platform Engineer leverages deep engineering and automation experience to operate and improve the cybersecurity services NuHarbor delivers to its clients. This is a leadership position within the Platform Engineering team, a multi-disciplinary group of engineers leading the design, architecture, implementation, optimization, and operation of NuHarbor’s cybersecurity services portfolio. The Staff Platform Engineer prioritizes client value, modern DevSecOps engineering practices, and ubiquitous automation while driving service improvement and efficiency across our Detection Engineering, Threat Intelligence, SIEM operations, MDR, and other service areas. The Staff Platform Engineer establishes and leads on practices and patterns to build necessary automations and infrastructure, leading to adoption across the organization.

What you’ll do

  • Collaborate with principal engineers to architect, design, implement, test, operate, and debug software systems, touching all levels of the tech stack, from the web-based front end to the API backend, data sources, and infrastructure-as-code projects.
  • Serves as a technical leader and owns team leadership responsibilities on ongoing projects.
  • Collaborate with principal engineers to develop, maintain, and enhance related policies, documentation, and procedures.
  • Recommends novel approaches that allow greater standardization and more effective management.
  • Implement and support features, custom tooling, and automation, following an agile development process to optimize service delivery with cloud technology.
  • Operate and maintain custom tooling, including CI/CD pipelines, to iterate configuration in client environments reliably, and consistently.
  • Refines and estimates requirements; plan and track team progress; forecast timelines for milestones and completion.
  • Deploy and administer commercial, open source, and internally developed software in public cloud environments using infrastructure-as-code and continuous delivery pipelines.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to technical team members on custom tooling and automation following DevOps and security best practices, clearing a path to excellence with enthusiasm and confidence.
  • Lead all technical aspects of one or more platform project, participate in code reviews, and mentor junior staff.
  • Provide required content and support to stakeholders in the requirements gathering, feedback, and deployment processes.
  • Provide agile process leadership; identify and advocate for changes that drive measurable improvements in team KPIs.
  • Lead in our ongoing platform team refinement and delivery process, following an agile model of requirements clarity, rapid execution, and tight feedback loops.
  • Define strategies for automating our cybersecurity services delivery, and when necessary, disseminating, and socializing automations to improve and enhance adoption.
  • Support the execution of our automation strategy, providing contextual data to improve the cybersecurity services, making them more effective for our clients.
  • Collaborates with principal engineers to build and maintain prototypes, example implementations, libraries, tools, patterns, strategies, best practices, etc.

Your foundation.  The requirements for this role:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and ten (10) years of experience working in an engineering position with a focus on software development, security, and or development operations.
    • Typical Degrees: Software Development, Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Mathematics, or related field(s).
    • In lieu of a degree, two (2) years of experience in a related technology field and relevant industry certifications are required.
  • Experience should include:
    • Six (6) years of development experience in Python or other common scripting languages used in security technology integration.
    • Six (6) years of experience in key SIEM techniques and technologies such as Splunk, Splunk Enterprise Security (ES), or Microsoft Sentinel.
    • Six (6) years of experience working with “infrastructure-as-code”, following DevOps practices, building and maintaining CI/CD tooling.
    • One (1) year in a leadership capacity directing software engineering teams forward.
  • Demonstrated success developing with one or more storage technologies, including relational databases, key-value stores, columnar databases, etc.
  • Significant experience with:
    • DevOps, Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery.
    • Designing, testing, and developing secure cloud-based services.
    • Agile Software Development process like Kanban, Lean, Scrum, XP, etc.
    • Serverless application architectures.
    • Software Engineering practices such as iterative and incremental development, source code management, continuous integration/delivery, DevSecOps, and Infrastructure as Code.
  • Strong communications skills to present and drive the technical decisions and organizational vision.
  • Team planning as it applies to the depth of technical leadership, ownership, and alignment across the total picture of delivery, and accountability as it pertains to delivering an MVP (minimum viable product).
  • Must be a citizen of the United States. 

Additional capabilities that will differentiate you for this role:

  • Ten (10) years of experience in a related technology field.
  • Experience designing, testing, and developing secure cloud-based services.
  • Object-Oriented Programming, Data validation.
  • Experience working in an Agile development process.
  • At least four (4) years of development experience and proficiency with:
    • Query languages such as Splunk Search Processing Language (SPL), or Kusto Query Language (KQL).
    • Automating software and system administration.
    • Working in cloud infrastructures and using IaC (Infrastructure as Code).
  • Deep knowledge of MITRE ATT&CK framework and general adversarial / defensive security techniques.
  • Experience applying the principle of least privilege, specifically in the use of AWS IAM roles and policies.
  • Experience in Security Operations Center (SOC) content development and automation implementations.
  • Experience with Terraform.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex information in a way that adjusts to the audience to ensure understanding.
  • Ability to match implementation to designs from tools like Figma, with the highest attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with the NIST Cyber Security Framework (CSF), common security controls and their purposes, and technologies that supply those controls.

Base Salary for this role is targeted at $129,000 - $157,000 annually. *Salary based on Burlington, VT salary data. Offer is based on candidate geography. Additionally, this role is eligible for the company bonus plan at a 10% target.
