POSITION SUMMARY

Umoja is seeking a passionate, attentive and solutions focused leader with significant managerial and capital project experience in biopharmaceutical R&D laboratory and GMP manufacturing environments to lead general site administration and corporate services at our Seattle, WA and Boulder, CO locations.

This individual will lead several business operations functions (EH&S, Facilities, Laboratory Operations, Procurement) and be responsible for real estate management, capital project planning and execution, space planning, physical plant and equipment management, as well as general maintenance and security for our offices, R&D laboratories and GMP manufacturing facility.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in personnel management, business workflow process and continuous improvement, laboratory and facility operations, clear communication with strong personnel skills to collaborate with and influence internal stakeholders across multiple geographic locations, as well as proven ability to operate independently with limited direction on initiatives aligned with Umoja goals.


CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES

Specific responsibilities include:  

Business Operations

  • Establish and manage Umoja enterprise business operations policies and procedure implementation
  • Management, execution, mentoring, and team development of EH&S, Facilities, Laboratory Operations and Procurement functions across all Umoja physical plants and geographic locations
  • Ensure laboratory best practice compliance and a culture of safety
  • Supervision of sourcing strategies, purchasing, vendor validation, asset management practices and cross-function supply chain/warehouse management relationship
  • Collaborate with key operational and scientific stakeholders to develop, prioritize, manage and report Umoja and departmental capital project and expense budgets, timelines, space planning based on Umoja priorities, needs and growth plans
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators and solutions to ensure operational excellence, continuous improvement, timely communications, and risk mitigation strategies
  • Advise and inform senior management on operations and risk-management of physical plant and equipment and workflow processes

Facilities

  • Directly lead Facilities team and responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the company's office and laboratory facilities (CO and WA), security, access control, and corporate services
  • Non-GMP and GMP plant management related to preventative and corrective maintenance, metrology-calibration, and utility equipment and building systems
  • Supervision of GMP process engineering support including equipment, automation and controls, cleaning-sanitization-sterilization and other initiatives
  • Project management and primary technical expert resource for all capital projects, including tenant improvements, utility modifications, new equipment, budgets, reports, and cost saving opportunities, as well as OAC (owner-architect-contractors), landlord and property management relationships
  • Lead company space planning activities, including office-desk allocation and assignments, occupancy forecasting and laboratory utilization, management of office relocations and moves

Required Qualifications at the Senior Director level:

  • Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, business or a related discipline and a minimum of 12 years of relevant industry experience in business operations role, or an equivalent combination
  • Minimum of 8 years of operations-related experience in both a research laboratory and cGMP manufacturing environment
  • Experience leading multiple teams and work effectively and efficiently in a collaborative manner across multiple functional areas and geographies
  • Self-motivated, pro-active, and able to independently work with risk-based decision-making capability.

Required Qualifications at the Vice President level:

  • Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, business or a related discipline and a minimum of 15 years of relevant industry experience in business operations role, or an equivalent combination
  • Minimum of 10 years of operations-related experience in both a research laboratory and cGMP manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in at least one or more of the following areas: real estate management, capital project planning and management, EH&S, procurement, and asset management
  • Experience leading multiple teams and work effectively and efficiently in a collaborative manner across multiple functional areas and geographies
  • Self-motivated, pro-active, and able to independently work with risk-based decision-making capability.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, matrix environment
  • Proficient in business and engineering software systems such as Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and AutoCAD as well as facilities systems including BMS, CMMS and EMS
  • Experience in project management tools for schedule, budget, and resource management and reporting.
  • Proven ability to implement and follow safety protocols and work practices

Physical Requirements:  

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment including gloves, protective clothing, and eye safety glasses.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including standing, use of hands, walking, bending, kneeling, and occasionally moving materials up to 30 pounds
  • Ability to work off hours, on-call, and/or weekends on occasion or in emergency situations
  • Ability to work onsite with flexibility to work from home as required
