What is the key purpose of a Senior Backend Engineer

As a Senior Backend Engineer working on the R&D Team in our Taiwan office. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robust backend systems and data pipelines. Your expertise will drive the success of our projects and ensure the reliability and efficiency of our data infrastructure.

For this role it is essential that you have:

  • 5+ years of hands-on coding experience in Java or similar object oriented programming languages such as C#, Scala.
  • Strong understanding of relational databases as well as no-sql storages: MySQL, Vertica, Cassandra, Google BigQuery..
  • Experience with common frameworks: Spring, Maven, Kafka, Apache Spark, Hadoop.
  • Deep understanding of core data structures, common algorithms and algorithmic complexity (Big O notation).
  • Proven experience in building and managing data pipelines.
  • Proficiency with version control systems such as Git, CVS, or Subversion.
  • Thorough understanding of backend integration concepts and technologies such as API, web services, message queuing, and security practices.
  • Quick and self-motivated learner with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in both team and cross-timezone environments.

Additional Preferred Skills: 

  • Well understanding of common design patterns and engineering best practices.
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies like Kubernetes and Helm.
  • Experience with workflow automation tools like Apache Airflow.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD tools such as Jenkins.
  • Familiarity with modern development practices such as Agile methodologies and DevOps principles.

What will I be doing on a day-to-day basis?

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will: 

  • Work in a SCRUM environment designing, coding, and managing integration projects from conception to completion.
  • Develop backend services to build and improve Taboola’s recommendation Ad Quality infrastructure. 
  • You will work closely with a team of engineers and product managers to reach optimal technology solutions.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code following best practices and standards.
  • Conduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback to team members.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot system performance, identifying and resolving issues proactively.
  • Provide production support, including handling incidents and alerts, to ensure system reliability and uptime.
