SMX is seeking a Modeling based Systems Engineer (MBSE) to collaborate with a team in the research, creation, modeling, and analysis of military systems to quantify the performance and impact of operational concepts and tactics. The candidate will be proficient in MBSE and be able to apply systems engineering, systems modeling, product lifecycle management, modeling and simulation, and related techniques, tools, and methodologies to construct, steward, curate, and leverage end-to-end digital content for National Guard programs. The goals include transforming legacy Document Based systems and command and control (C2) models into alignment with the Joint All Domain Command and Control (JADC2) vision of improved information sharing, layered security, common data and architecture standards, system resiliency, faster implementation, and more effective cross-domain capabilities.

This is a remote position within driving distance to California, Maryland for occasional meetings. 

This position requires a DoD secret security clearance with the ability to obtain TS/SCI, which requires US citizenship for work on DoD contracts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Elicit and capture stakeholder needs in models
  • Develop and extend system models using existing requirements, interface documentation, and related design and systems engineering documents
  • Provide MBSE/Systems Modeling Language (SysML) expertise and related support to the entire systems engineering team
  • Understand conventional systems engineering processes and the ability to create technological model-centric methods and tools to meet system design in an automated, accurate and cost-effective manner, thereby streamlining the system development process and reducing technical process and document generation timelines
  • Work collaboratively in a digital engineering environment, integrating data from across systems engineering disciplines into a cohesive system model

Required Skills & Experience

  • Required clearance: Secret with ability to obtain TS/SCI
  • 5+ years’ experience with MBSE and M&S tools and techniques such as Cameo/NoMagic
  • 2+ years’ experience aligning models to JADC2
  • Requires the following education/experience:
    • Master’s degree in engineering, technical (science/mathematics), business, or computer science/IT discipline and 10 years of relevant experience OR
    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, technical, business, or computer science/IT discipline and 14 years of relevant experience
    • Experience may not be substituted for a degree
  • Experience with modeling, simulation, and mission analysis techniques and tools to include transforming legacy document-based models to a MBSE environment
  • Experienced at self-starting, seeking solutions, and works well in a team environment
  • Strong understanding of Systems Engineering V
  • Demonstrated ability to develop system behavior, structure, data, and requirements models employing Cameo/NoMagic applications in a team environment
  • Experience with the practical application of Unified Modeling Language (UML) or Systems Modeling Language (SysML)
  • Ability to use MBSE tools and processes to create and manage tailored MBSE artifacts that capture analysis and the resulting engineering decisions and trades made during acquisition and development
  • Proficient in the use and operation of the C2 and simulation systems
  • Proficiency using MS Word, Excel, Adobe, and Outlook skills

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Experience in developing APIs to connect tools in the digital thread is a plus
  • Experience running CAMEO Simulation Tool Kit for SysML validation
  • Knowledge of using system models during government engineering reviews, and other system engineering disciplines, including configuration management, risk management, cybersecurity, and cyber certification processes
  • Experience in Systems Engineering Technical Review Process (SETR)
  • Understanding and experience working with Standard Work Packages (SWP) which will provide a common approach to standardize the processes, tools, and ability to develop accurate and cost-effective
  • Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) architecture products for capability assessment and design of weapon systems and SoS
  • Knowledge of modular open systems approach (MOSA) design principles and technologies, DoD architecture standards and framework, and Agile systems engineering methods and tools
  • Object Management Group (OMG) Certified System Modeling Language Professional (OCSMP) Model User or Builder Certification
  • International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) Certification
