About the Role

SandboxAQ is looking for a product designer to help build the interfaces for the next generation of computational tools for AI and simulation in chemistry and the life sciences. In this role, you will design workflows that allow researchers to intuitively derive complex insights from large datasets and easily configure large-scale cloud simulations.

You will bring customer requirements to life through wireframes, mockups and prototypes, which will be refined through workshops, user interviews and other stakeholder interactions. Collaborating closely with our Head of Design and product team, you will work with users (internal and external) to design new solutions. Working closely with our engineering team, you will ensure that your designs are effectively implemented. Your core responsibilities will include defining the user experience, conducting research to validate user interactions, and crafting engaging interfaces.

What You’ll Do

  • On a daily basis, drive the design of the front-end of SandboxAQ’s chemistry and life sciences simulation platform by creating wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity mockups that effectively communicate design concepts and user interactions for internal and external audiences.
  • Contribute to, influence, and drive the vision of our platform with the Design and Product team to help guide and inspire the organization.
  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and developers to gather and understand design requirements, identify risks and opportunities and solve them collectively to ensure seamless design implementation.
  • Thrive in ambiguity with a bias for action, breaking down long, complex projects into executable units of work.
  • Conduct workshops, qualitative interviews, usability testing, and other user research methods to inform and validate design decisions.
  • Present designs to stakeholders, including users, engineers, and product managers, and iterate based on feedback.
  • Drive the visual design of the user interface, by developing/evolving a style guide and/or design system, ensuring consistency across UI components and user interactions, and providing detailed specifications to front-end developers.
  • Distill complex and dense information into clarifying data visualizations and views for the various lenses of user archetypes.
  • Analyze product analytics to improve user interactions with the application.
  • Deliver regular customer facing product demos for presales activities demonstrating the product’s differentiated capabilities.
  • Interface with go to market partners to build user interfaces relevant and supportive to Sandbox’s strategic partnership efforts.
  • Maintain dotted-line, cross-departmental connection to and collaboration with the broader design functions in other SandboxAQ Business Units.

Who You Are

  • 6+ years of experience building interfaces with complex scientific and data-intensive workflows and visualizations for B2B and/or B2C applications.
  • Exceptional visual and interaction design craft.
  • A portfolio demonstrating your passion and high design craft for clear, intuitive, and user-centered designs. Work examples should demonstrate:
    • Product design skills (visual and interaction)
    • Design thinking from problem to ideation to solution
    • Experience crafting Platform solutions for with complex industries
    • Breadth and range of work (solutions, concepts, styles)
    • Ability to work in a cross-functional team
  • Experience conducting user research utilizing various methods, including but not limited to usability studies, contextual inquiry, and surveys.
  • Skilled in problem-solving, analyzing research data, identifying end-user pain points, and translating user requirements into design solutions.
  • Proficient in Figma, with knowledge of other design tools (Adobe Suite, etc.) to produce wireframes and high-fidelity mockups.
  • Experience with using AI tools to augment design efficiency, from research, to content generation, to vibe coding.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal communication and presentation abilities, essential for effectively collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams and articulating design concepts to stakeholders.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, highly ambiguous, high autonomy environment, with a strong learning and iterative design approach.

Nice to Haves

  • Familiarity with AI and emerging machine learning workflows.
  • Experience working with software in one or more of the following domains: Chemistry, Medical Sciences, Physics (Quantum).
  • Familiarity with cloud-based platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Design, Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or another relevant field.

Race & Ethnicity Definitions

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

A "recently separated veteran" means any veteran during the three-year period beginning on the date of such veteran's discharge or release from active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval, or air service.

An "active duty wartime or campaign badge veteran" means a veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service during a war, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized under the laws administered by the Department of Defense.

An "Armed forces service medal veteran" means a veteran who, while serving on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service, participated in a United States military operation for which an Armed Forces service medal was awarded pursuant to Executive Order 12985.

OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
