Overview:
As Head of Communications, you will set the vision and lead the charge in developing a bold, comprehensive external communications strategy that amplifies Bankrate’s voice across media and industry. You’ll expand the company’s reputation as a trusted thought leader by driving earned media coverage, landing strategic placements, and securing high-impact visibility that moves the needle. You’ll lead a dynamic, multidisciplinary team spanning Public Relations and Media Outreach, Media Operations, Expert Contributors, and production operations, ensuring flawless execution across every channel. Acting as a key connector between executive leadership, brand, legal, and marketing, you will align messaging and safeguard the company’s reputation while elevating its public visibility, influence, and earned media reach. And, just as importantly, you will mentor and inspire top talent — cultivating the next generation of leaders and scaling the organization into an enterprise-grade, best-in-class team that sets the standard for communications excellence.
This role is open to remote or hybrid candidates (East coast preference), with hybrid being central to our New York, NY or Charlotte area offices.
What You’ll Do:
- Communications & Media Strategy
- Develop and execute a comprehensive external communications strategy aligned with brand goals and corporate priorities
- Position executives, experts, and the broader organization as credible, authoritative voices within the industry
- Own and refine key messaging frameworks, media narratives, and external positioning
- Public Relations & Media Outreach
- Cultivate and manage relationships with journalists, editors, analysts, and podcast hosts
- Secure media appearances, contributed articles, event placements, and strategic partnerships
- Lead proactive and reactive PR efforts, including crisis communications and reputation management
- Thought Leadership & Fellow Management
- Oversee a roster of fellows and subject matter experts who act as spokespeople across media formats (written, video, events)
- Guide their content development, media training, and thought leadership strategies
- Coordinate integration across brand campaigns, editorial calendars, and performance storytelling
- Team & Operations Management
- Lead and grow a team of specialists across production editing, PR strategy, media ops, and comms
- Develop repeatable processes for campaign rollouts, press readiness, and external content QA
- Partner with video, design, and editorial teams to ensure on-message execution across all media
- Measurement & Executive Reporting
- Define and track KPIs related to earned media reach, sentiment, share of voice, and thought leadership impact
- Provide regular updates to executive leadership and cross-functional stakeholders
- Benchmark communications effectiveness against competitors and industry trends
What We’re Looking For:
- 10+ years in communications, public relations, media, or brand strategy, with at least 3 years in a leadership role
- Proven experience in building and scaling media programs for high-growth companies
- Demonstrated success in executive visibility, earned media, and reputation management
- Experience managing on-camera talent, spokesperson prep, and media training
- Strong strategic communicator with exceptional storytelling, messaging, and writing abilities
- Deep knowledge of media relations, PR tactics, editorial best practices, and crisis response
- Comfortable working across multiple formats: written op-eds, live interviews, webinars, social, and short-form video
- Skilled in cross-functional collaboration, including legal, brand, marketing, and executive teams
- Familiar with communications and media tools such as Cision, TVEyes, Google Suite, Asana, or project management platforms
Compensation:
- Compensation Range: $220,000 - $360,000 per year + equity
- New York Compensation Range: $275,000-$450,000 per year + equity

- Flexible Paid Time Off (PTO): We believe time to rest and recharge is essential. That’s why we offer a generous and flexible PTO policy. Full-time employees accrue 20 days of PTO for a full calendar year annually, with an increase to 25 days after five years of service
Compensation:
- Compensation Range: $220,000 - $310,000 per year + equity
- New York Compensation Range: $275,000-$387,500 per year + equity
