Technology and data are critical to any quantitative trading business. It’s a fundamental requirement for our computerised trading strategies that the necessary hardware, technology and data is available for our researchers and technologists. Our competitiveness is dictated by the speed at which we have the compute power and data required for the evaluation of new sources, for processing the vast quantity of disparate data we ingest and for the effectively deployment of our strategies onto markets worldwide. We strive to provide a complete landscape of what is available, staying up to date with new developments and ensuring we are consistently subscribed to the best value products for our needs.

The responsibility of our buyers is to work with a variety of stakeholders and counterparties to help source and procure hardware, technology and data to facilitate our systematic strategies. You’ll aspire, over time, to take full ownership of areas of procurement within the business and manage the full pipeline from idea generation to sourcing to subscription/implementation.

This role involves proactive and strategic work. You’ll often find yourself managing multiple projects and requests requiring swift attention. As a multi-asset, multi-strategy trading firm, our needs are complex and necessitate a strong understanding of the landscape to ensure our infrastructure meet our requirements in research and technology. This will require building strong internal and external networks, understanding stakeholder needs and working effectively with many different teams from software engineering, research, finance and legal.

Typical day-to-day duties and responsibilities:

  • Managing vendor relationships; ensuring effective and proactive communication of needs and ensuring timely processing of payments.
  • Organising trials; processing large volume of requests and ensuing all trials are tracked and managed in an accurate manner.
  • Negotiating and monitoring contracts; reviewing ongoing subscription usage and value and looking to reduce costs where possible.
  • Collaborating with GSA teams; understanding the requirements of our researchers and technologists are met, organising the flow of contracts through legal and collaborating with finance to ensure smooth payment processes.
  • Identifying and executing improvements; reviewing, critiquing, and building upon current processes and systems to improve the service for internal clients.

The Person

  • Proactive and motivated. You’ll have a high level of initiative and a self-starter approach. You care about your work being executed at the highest of standards.
  • Commercially minded and driven. You enjoy the art of negotiation and will naturally pursue opportunities to broaden your network and understanding of the space - whether this be through attending conferences or general networking.
  • Highly organised and able to prioritise effectively. You can efficiently collate, track, continually prioritise and proactively status report whilst managing the simultaneous resolution of many time-sensitive issues.
  • Interpersonal, collaborative and an effective communicator. The work necessitates frequent collaboration with a range of stakeholders and counterparties both technical and non-technical including software engineers, legal, researchers, portfolio managers and external vendors.
  • Fast learning and adaptable. You can quickly pick up and understand new concepts, systems, and strategies and are comfortable working in a fast paced and often uncertain environment.

The Skills

  • Basic competency with Excel. Any further hands-on technical prowess (SQL, Python) could be advantageous, but more importantly you are motivated to improve your technical skills as technologies and infrastructure develop.
  • General understanding of finance with a natural interest in the sector. No previous industry experience is necessary, but you’ll exhibit why the sector and the challenges we face intrigue you.
  • Previous exposure to the IT procurement process, purchasing, channel and/or sales procedure.
  • Knowledge of different data delivery mechanisms (AWS, SFTP, Snowflake etc.), financial/technology counterparties and/or research data is beneficial but by no means essential.

Academic Requirements:

  • A good degree within an analytical field, not necessarily a mathematical or scientific one although we often find this to be advantageous.
