Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced biologist to lead development of Quotient’s histology and tissue profiling capabilities. The role requires a deep understanding of the biology of various chronic and acute diseases, in particular the tissues and cell types involved. The successful candidate will lead a team of scientists to develop bespoke methods for phenotyping and isolating cells of interest, for example via immunohistochemistry (IHC) on fixed tissue slices, or dissociation and cell/nuclei sorting. The ideal candidate brings creativity, scientific rigor, and a deep-rooted desire to innovate, as a well as a proven ability to manage a high-performing team to deliver ambitious research goals. This role is based in the vicinity of Cambridge UK and will be primarily in-person. All applicants will require permission to work in the UK.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead tissue profiling R&D within the Assay Development team.
  • Line manage a small team of scientists, ensuring they remain inspired and highly motivated to deliver on company goals.
  • Plan, design and direct large, high-impact research projects in the areas of tissue/cell preparation and profiling.
  • Thought leader for development and onboarding of cutting edge tissue profiling techniques.
  • Manage cross-functional teams to deliver complex projects, modelling good practice in project management.
  • Explore the scientific literature and propose innovative new tools/methods to support Quotient’s overarching goals.
  • Work closely with contract research organisations (CROs) to deliver projects on time and on budget.
  • Perform bench-based experiments to drive delivery of particularly complex projects.
  • Advise senior management on strategic decision-making.
  • Oversee roll-out of new protocols to the production team.

Key Qualifications:

  • Either:
    • A Master’s degree plus 10 years of research experience in tissues R&D or
    • A PhD in molecular/cell/tissue biology or a related field, plus 6 years of relevant post-PhD experience
  • Deep understanding of tissue and cell biology, and experience working with a range of human tissue and cell types.
  • Scientific expertise in tissue preparation and profiling methods such as histology, immunohistochemistry, tissue dissociation and FACS.
  • Evidence of an ability to devise novel solutions to research challenges and drive technological innovation.
  • Experience with line management of research scientists.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including preparation and delivery of high quality presentations.
  • Excellent project planning and prioritization skills, and a proven ability to balance competing priorities.
  • Ability to work successfully in a matrix environment, where tasks may be assigned by people other than your direct line manager.
  • An understanding of next generation sequencing methods.
  • A high degree of energy, accuracy and attention to detail, and a passion for contributing to work leading to the creation of transformative medicines for patients with serious diseases.
