Distinguished Engineer, Network and Platform
US - Remote
Fastly is seeking a Distinguished Engineer to join our network and platform engineering group to play a critical role in systems and network engineering as well as cross-functional processes to deliver innovative and industry changing outcomes.
This position is designed for an exceptional individual who thrives in addressing complex challenges that fall outside the norm. The role is critical to our business in the following scenarios:

When the current trajectory of a feature roadmap or capacity delivery does meet business and customer expectations, our DEs step in to debug the situation, identify the blockers and help engineers and product teams course correct to meet expected timelines.

When our standard processes fail to resolve complex production issues, you will navigate these intricate situations, ensuring a resolution that maintains our high standards of global scale fleet and customer satisfaction.

When a situation arises that could have a negative impact on our business or customers and there isn't a clear strategy in place, the Distinguished Engineer is tasked with devising and implementing a plan to mitigate these effects and protect our operations.

Every Distinguished Engineer at Fastly has one or two industry changing initiatives that they are leading. This one is no exception. You will work with the leadership in your first few months of joining Fastly to identify the right initiatives based on your interests and our business needs.
What You'll Do

Production KPIs; You will work on ensuring all KPIs for our production stability and performance are trending in the right direction and kick off engineering efforts or help with the ones in flight to course correct metrics that are not trending in the right direction.

Strategic Problem Solving: Lead the charge in tackling exceptional challenges that elude standard resolution processes, using your expertise to devise innovative solutions.

Cross-Functional Leadership: Collaborate with teams across the organization, from engineering to operations, to ensure a cohesive approach to solving critical issues.

Impact Management: Proactively identify potential situations that could negatively affect the business or customers and develop strategies to mitigate these risks before they escalate.

Customer Advocacy: Act as a champion for our customers, ensuring their needs are met even in the face of complex challenges.

Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the ongoing refinement of our engineering practices, processes and procedures, ensuring our teams are equipped to handle exceptional situations effectively.

Production Advocacy; Observe production incidents; Study post-mortems and ensure lessons we learn from incidents don’t go to waste and become part of improvements engineers adopt for increased reliability.
What We're Looking For

Large-Scale System Experience: Must have experience designing and/or operating large-scale systems, understanding the realities and limitations of a production environment. The ability to make trade-off decisions, considering resourcing, timelines, and external constraints, is crucial.

Extensive Experience: A broad range of experience in operations and engineering, with a proven track record of handling complex technical challenges.

Strategic Thinker: Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to think strategically about long-term risks and solutions.

Leadership Abilities: Strong engineering leadership skills, with experience in guiding cross-functional teams through challenging situations.

Communication Skills: Excellent communication abilities, capable of conveying complex ideas clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Salary
The estimated salary range for this position is $287,570 to $359,460.
Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location.
This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly’s equity and discretionary bonus programs.
