Digital Ocean is seeking an experienced staff network engineer to join our infrastructure team, which focuses on edge and backbone engineering. You are expected to independently manage large-scale, organization-wide projects at the Staff Network Engineer level, demonstrating deep technical expertise and a broad understanding of organizational impacts. Your role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining our global network infrastructure, ensuring high scalability, system agility, and stability for our diverse customer base.
What You’ll Add to DigitalOcean:
- Lead and execute initiatives to enhance network processes, products, and services with minimal guidance, demonstrating a clear understanding of the technical and business implications.
- Design scalable network architectures for edge computing and global backbone networks, optimizing for performance, reliability, and security.
- Triage complex issues across multiple technologies, leading incident response, troubleshooting efforts, and detailed technical post-mortems to prevent future incidents.
- Author, run, and improve runbooks, policies, and procedures, driving the adoption of monitoring standards and best practices across the team to mitigate technical debt.
- Collaborate with other infrastructure and engineering teams to develop innovative solutions that meet evolving product and feature requirements while meeting customer performance expectations.
What We Expect From You:
- Experience working on, building, and troubleshooting large-scale datacenter networks
- Experience working on, building, and troubleshooting global backbone networks
- Experience working with Juniper hardware (e.g., MX, QFX, EX, SRX) and the Junos operating system, and Nokia, Arista, and Ciena
- Experience working with typical layer-2 and -3 protocols such (e.g., BGP, OSPF, VRRP, IS-IS ,LACP,MC-LAG)
- 2+ years experience working with MPLS, including BGP-LU (RSVP-TE experience a plus)
- The ability to function independently on routine tasks and project work
- The ability to utilize a variety of communication skills and document concepts with a particular audience in mind
- Strong Linux skills along with experience in Python or any other similar language
- Experience with Salt configuration management
- Understanding of overlay and underlay networking concepts
- Experience with Ansible configuration management a plus
- Experience with Ethernet/IP
- Experience with Jira or other ticketing systems
- Expert knowledge of automation tools such as Ansible or SaltStack.
- Familiarity with network monitoring technologies such as SNMP, OpenConfig and Streaming Telemetry.
