Who We Are:
Calico (Calico Life Sciences LLC) is an Alphabet-founded research and development company whose mission is to harness advanced technologies and model systems to increase our understanding of the biology that controls human aging. Calico will use that knowledge to devise interventions that enable people to lead longer and healthier lives. Calico’s highly innovative technology labs, its commitment to curiosity-driven discovery science, and, with academic and industry partners, its vibrant drug-development pipeline, together create an inspiring and exciting place to catalyze and enable medical breakthroughs.
Position Description:
Calico seeks an experimental scientist interested in translating discoveries in aging mechanisms into clinical interventions that positively impact aging and age-related diseases. We are looking for a highly motivated and creative scientist who can provide insightful analysis of diverse data, develop and implement exploratory and validation in vitro and in vivo studies.
As part of a highly collaborative and matrixed group, you will design, plan and execute studies that generate hypotheses and move translational programs forward. This will entail developing tools to identify and perturb specific cell types in vitro and in vivo, and testing targeted perturbations in age-related pathways for their ability to improve health and disease. As the ideal candidate, you are a self-motivated experimentalist who likes to test ideas with their own hands, enjoys developing new methodology, and thinks anything worth doing is worth doing well.
Position Responsibilities:
- Design and execute molecular, cellular, and biochemistry experiments to support research focused in mammalian aging and disease
- Work closely with team members to develop and optimize fit-for-purpose assays
- Coordinate work with external CROs and internal technology collaborators
- Analyze and interpret data, delivering and communicating results for time-sensitive goals
- Stay current on relevant literature and attend scientific conferences
Position Requirements:
- BS/MS with 2+ years of relevant technical experience
- Extensive experience with mammalian cell culture including primary cells, molecular biology skills (e.g. DNA/RNA isolation, RNA-seq) and biochemical methods (e.g. SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, ELISAs) is a must
- Familiarity with fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, tissue extraction and processing, cellular dissociation and processing for RNA and protein analysis, and immunohistochemistry or in situ hybridization (ISH)
- Strong attention to detail, possess quantitative skills and excellent verbal/written communication skills
- Candidate must be an enthusiastic team player and able to work both independently and collaboratively
- Must be willing to work onsite at least four days per week
Highly Valued Qualifications:
- Experience with mesenchymal stromal cells, fibrosis, immunology, or metabolism research
The estimated base salary range for this role is $119,000 - $147,000. Actual pay will be based on a number of factors including experience and qualifications. This position is also eligible for two annual cash bonuses.
Calico requires all new hires to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to the first date of employment. As required by applicable law, Calico will consider requests for Reasonable Accommodations.
