The Role

Sr. / Director - Controller. Reporting to the VP of Finance, you will be responsible for overseeing accounting activities and financial reporting for our company. In this role, you will develop and maintain accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. You will manage a team of accounting professionals and oversee a multitude of accounting activities, including general ledger preparation, payroll, financial reporting, year-end close, tax and audit preparation, and support for budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning activities. This role will be instrumental in providing internal financial accounting guidance and you will partner with cross functional leaders, including external partners. 

How You Will Contribute

As Controller, you will provide internal financial guidance to business partners and work closely with cross-functional leaders and external partners to ensure the company's financial operations are aligned with our mission and values. You will be responsible for establishing and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external. You will seek to build a dynamic accounting team and foster a culture of financial responsibility and accountability across the organization empowering our employees to act like owners. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Build and improve our finance and accounting functions and systems for the company 
  • Lead the evaluation, selection, and implementation of our general ledger system 
  • Work to identify and create plans to upgrade other finance and accounting systems
  • Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year-end close, compliance with US GAAP, tax, and payroll obligations
  • Ensure the GL structure is up to date to help provide insights to running the business
  • Manage accounts payable function and staff
  • Research and provide guidance on technical accounting issues
  • Manage Company’s portfolio of insurance
  • Assist with Board presentations and oversee external investor reporting
  • Manage stock option plan administration

Basic qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA and audit experience
  • 8+ years of Accounting and Finance experience with at least 1 year in a leadership role in a biotech or life sciences company
  • Desire and ability to work in a “roll up your sleeves” position within a fast-paced and growing company
  • Motivated by fostering a culture of financial responsibility and accountability across the organization
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP principles and regulatory requirements in the biotech industry
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and senior management
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP principles and regulatory requirements in the biotech industry

Preferred qualifications

  • CPA and audit experience from a Big 4 accounting firm
  • Experience in an emerging biotech environment
  • Previous general ledger system implementation experience preferred
  • Previous experience with 409A evaluations
