What we’re looking for:

Nexamp is looking to hire a Director, Commissioning Engineering to join it's Clean Energy Deployment team. As a technical expert in system commissioning and SCADA engineering and an organizational leader, you will provide mentorship and guidance in SOP development, training, and technical development in all areas of SCADA, communication, data acquisition, and related technical fields for the Engineering team. This will be accomplished through technical expertise, innovative ideas, collaboration with internal stakeholders and establishing personal relationships with the key proponents of in business development, CED operations, grid integration, supply chain, deployment, and asset management. A balance of soft skills, technical acumen, and an innovative thinker will be empowered to lead the team to be an engineering leader in our industry.  

We are accepting candidates across our hub offices of Boston, MA, Chicago, IL & Lawrence, MA where you will be hybrid. You will manage a team of technical subject matter experts and report to the VP, Engineering.

What you’ll do:  

  • Define and execute the strategy for commissioning and SCADA for Nexamp Clean Energy Deployment. In partnership with Nexamp Clean Energy Operations, identify the short and long-term needs to ensure all Nexamp projects are designed and built to enable the Operations team to monitor and control the assets and to ensure a smooth hand-off to Operations.
  • Manage a team of commissioning engineers to complete commissioning and acceptance testing of project networks, communications, and control systems, balance of plant relay protection, metering, HVAC, fire suppression, and electrical systems, battery subsystems, inverter subsystems. Perform site visits as required for commissioning and witness testing.
  • Manage departmental and company-level relationships with a network of 3rd party engineers and commissioning sub-contractors engineers.
  • Ensure proper implementation and validation of data feeds for PV, BESS, BMS, weather stations, and protection systems. Ensure proper documentation of commissioning and troubleshooting activities.
  • Drive development and continuous improvement of processes, process documentation, technical specifications, training manuals, etc.
  • Manage a team of SCADA project specialists to develop and implement control designs and communications architecture at all project sites across Nexamp’s national portfolio that interface to utilities, customer’s Energy Management Systems, Nexamp’s Operation Center, and project energy trading platforms.
  • Lead the integration of BMS, EMS, DAS, SCADA, and Energy Trading Platform systems for PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), hybrid PV+BESS systems in both DC-Coupled and AC-Coupled architectures, and microgrid systems.
  • Lead all aspects of Nexamp’s proprietary NexBESS Energy Management System (EMS), drive program implementation and adoption of all control and data acquisition initiatives.
  • Ensure the proper project-level implementation of network security controls with hosting provider(s), such as firewalls, VPN tunnels, IDS/IPS, DNS monitoring, WAF and DDoS protection; participate and contribute to internal and external security working groups to define and mitigate cybersecurity risks.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of SCADA strategy and requirements for Nexamp’s DG, C&I, and utility-scale projects.
  • Process and interpret SCADA requirements of different markets, local utility requirements, ISO/ ISO compliance requirements for telemetry and controls hardware and software and coordinate the procurement and installation of necessary telecom services. Serve as internal and external Subject Matter Expert for the control and data acquisition systems of PV and PV+ESS systems; lead innovation teams centered on new product research and implementation.
  • Train and mentor engineering department personnel, enabling professional growth, and facilitating company expansion by developing overall team capability.
  • Support the VP, Engineering by providing priorities of work, feedback on initiatives, and establishing new focus areas to drive continuous improvement.
  • Provide senior management and C-level executives accurate and timely analytics and reporting when required. 

What you’ll bring:

  • 8+ years of experience including commissioning of grid-tied electrical generation assets and design and commissioning of SCADA, building automation, or control systems
  • 4+ years of engineering management experience required.
  • Bachelors Degree – computer science or related field (or equivalent work experience)
  • Experience in controls engineering for DG and utility-scale renewable/hybrid energy, PV/BESS, (AC-coupled/DC-coupled systems) and microgrid systems required.
  • Experience interfacing with utilities and an in-depth knowledge of common utility/ISO requirements for communication and control of grid-tied DG and utility-scale generation.
  • Expertise in commissioning and resolving site technical issues, proven success in independently troubleshooting challenging SCADA related technical issues.
  • Experience with NERC/CIP, SOC2, and ISA-62443 standards as well as experience securing cloud-based systems (AWS, Azure, private clouds etc.) strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with technical communications protocols (Modbus/TCP, DNP3.0, BACnet, etc.), commonly used controls software/hardware platforms, and communication standards (MESA, Sunspec, etc.).
  • Strong working knowledge and hands-on experience with various relays, meters, SCADA Gateways, and Data Concentrators, including programming of RTACs and similar devices.
  • Experience with operational requirements and processes for PV and BESS systems and working knowledge of Network Operation Center (NOC) security and operational protocols preferred.
  • Experience with Aveva (SCADA platform) preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to provide technical guidance to personnel with varying amounts of technical expertise.
  • Ability to manage a multi-level team within a fast-paced work environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience managing engineering managers, individual contributors, contractors, resolving scheduling conflicts with key stakeholders, and managing internal and external resources.

The reasonably estimated salary for this role at Nexamp ranges from $180,000 - $195,000. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance (for example, annual bonus programs based on individual and company performance, non-annual sales incentive plans, or other non-annual incentive plans). Additionally, you may be eligible to participate in the Company’s stock option plan. Actual base salary may vary based upon, but is not limited to, skills and qualifications, internal equity, performance, and geographic location.
