About the role
Elemental is seeking a seasoned Director of Compliance to join the legal team. In this role, you will proactively reduce risk and ensure that our organization adheres to ethical standards, laws, and industry regulations. In addition, you will be expected to prevent improper conduct of vendors, employees and partners by developing, implementing and enforcing policies. This role is a critical part of the legal team within the organization that will ultimately be expected to provide guidance to ensure that the company stays in good standing and in compliance with government regulations.
This position will report to the General Counsel. The role will also be tasked with working cross functionally to train the team on processes and procedures.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Be a subject matter expert on the team to provide well-reasoned, yet practical enterprise risk management advice on a wide range of compliance related matters, policies, and processes.
- Develop, implement and enforce procedures and policies to ensure the company’s compliance with industry and government regulations particularly in emerging and evolving risk areas, such as those associated with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund with the goal of fostering efficiency and compliance.
- Explain to and train employees on the importance of such requirements in an understandable way and come up with risk-based and business-oriented mitigation plans.
- Perform consistent risk assessments to recognise areas where the company might be vulnerable to non-compliance.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to initiate well-functioned and integrated risk management initiatives, systems, and processes.
- Conduct compliance investigations where necessary, including evidence collection, coordinating complex investigations and interviews
- Create and maintain records; ensure appropriate records/files are maintained accurately and are properly reconciled per all record-keeping requirements.
- For all substantive areas of responsibility, track and interpret existing and emerging regulations; advise on regulatory changes and enforcement trends; support the continuous improvement of legal processes and compliance practices; and collaborate with outside counsel, consultants, and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Engage and assist on government contracts compliance; FOIA requests, internal compliance and procurement.
Qualifications
Desired skills:
- Substantial experience in managing/ navigating regulatory compliance areas. These include document retention, lobbying, debarment, Buy America, Anti-money Laundering, conflicts
- Working knowledge of relevant federal requirements (e.g., 2 CFR Part 200 and OMB circulars)
- Substantial experience in leading or managing key elements of compliance, procurement and regulatory programs in medium to large organizations.
- Proactive thinking beyond assigned tasks and consistently developing solutions to further the compliance, procurement and compliance program.
- Detailed-oriented, able to connect dots, see the big picture, drive changes, and confidently navigate and appropriately mitigate challenging compliance requirements with business mindsets
- Must possess strong project management skills and able to plan and execute projects of significant scope and complexity
- Ability to operate without extensive supervision and act as a self-starter
- Energetic, fast-paced, and always desire to go the extra mile
- Exceptional communication, drafting and analytical skills for working with lawyers and non-lawyers, including training experience

Compensation & Benefits
This is a full-time "at-will" position working at least 40 hours per week. You will be asked to travel for work periodically.
The salary range for this role is $106,400-191,000, which is based on market data and the organization's compensation philosophy. Individual salary offers will depend on and may vary with location, relevant education, knowledge, skills, and experience. Location
We will consider candidates anywhere in the US, but have a preference for candidates in one of our office locations: New York, Washington DC, San Francisco Bay Area, or Honolulu. We are asking employees to come into the office at least one day a week to build community with the team. Currently, most people come in 1-2 times a week, but we encourage those who are interested to come in more often if they’d like.
