Lead, Research, Public Policy, Element AI
Element AI (EAI) is seeking a candidate to fill the position of Lead, Research, Public Policy. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work from the Montreal, Toronto, or London (UK) offices.

This is an exciting opportunity to be at the frontier of public policy research, researching the impact of AI and big data on society. Our goal is to help steer a positive social outcome from AI & big data through policy & regulation, and you will be a key part of our strategic work towards achieving that goal. The Lead, Research, Public Policy will oversee our public policy research efforts, liaising with external research partners (including the World Economic Forum, Cambridge University, and others); building out Element AI’s internal public policy research capacity; and authoring reports relating to Element AI’s strategic public policy priorities. The successful candidate report to the Head of Public Policy and Government Relations (Montreal-based).
What you will be doing :
Leading a team to conduct and manage all Policy research activities on emerging areas of artificial intelligence & data policy (privacy, antitrust, IP, sectoral regulations, etc.) as well as government policies to support high growth firms (immigration policies, R&D support, etc.);
Leading EAI’s responses to government consultations relating to AI & data policy, domestically and internationally;
Leveraging EAI’s partnerships with think thanks and academic fellows and institutions to produce output and publish content, and identify new potential research partners;
Participating on related committees; coordinating, and to the extent possible, harmonizing Element AI’s policy policies and initiatives with other jurisdictions, both domestically and internationally.
Conducting analysis and longer-term research on issues that are relevant to Element AI.
We want you to join us because you have:
The ability to think strategically and to explain complex issues and concepts to a wide range of audiences;
Experience in leading a team;
Excellent written and verbal skills in English, and preferably French;
Formal presentation skills;
Good judgement and strong personal ethics with an ability to make decisions when required;
Demonstrated ability to be flexible, collaborative, and succeed in fluid startup environment;
Experience publishing research, articles and reports.
Interest in the regulation of artificial intelligence;
Academic background in law and political science;
5-10 years of professional public policy research experience, or which at least 5 was in a research management role;
2-3 years experience in a private sector company, high tech or platform business preferred.
The ability to organize and manage your time, including numerous competing deadlines;
A strong track record of detail-oriented work and flawless execution.
