Position Summary:

As Product Counsel, you'll have a broad and diverse range of responsibilities, bringing curiosity, creativity and sound judgment to facilitate product innovation with legal guidance on financial service product and feature development within a complex regulatory framework. You will build strong relationships and partner with our product teams and more senior counsel to develop new offerings and advise on legal risk and regulatory compliance. The legal issues you'll encounter are cutting edge and always evolving.  As we expand our offerings, your ideas and contributions will make an immediate impact. 

The ideal candidate will have experience in the fintech space.  The successful candidate will be organized and creative, knowledgeable in financial services and skilled in researching and mastering complex legal topics.  You will also be skilled in providing clear, accurate, practical, and actionable advice to non-lawyers in clear language. You will be comfortable working with the unknown in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, capable of an expert understanding of a legal issue and also separating the practical from the academic.  

This is a Palo Alto-based hybrid position and will require work from our headquarters every week with a minimum of 2 days a week in the office, generally on Mondays and Wednesdays, and/or as needed. This is an individual contributor, non-managerial role. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $143,900 - $214,000 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.

What You'll Do:

  • Develop positive and trusted relationships with business partners and compliance, marketing, and legal colleagues, and stay informed on key product developments
  • Provide full product life-cycle counseling from ideation to execution and go-to-market
  • Actively bring forward creative ideas and insights into how legal frameworks can support new product developments and customer experiences consistent with our customer first and collaborative values
  • Review ideas for new products and features from early stages of development through launch by assessing legal risks while providing creative and practical legal advice
  • Look around corners and creatively solve problems for the business as they plan, build, and execute their product roadmap
  • Counsel and coordinate across various departments to facilitate product innovation within a complex regulatory framework
  • Prioritize workload to set goals and meet deadlines in a fluctuating and sometimes ambiguous business environment
  • Own your projects with a can-do attitude
  • Develop scaled strategies for addressing risk in business-centric ways, looking to help build or refine processes that allow the business flexibility and freedom to move quickly
  • Assist where needed in drafting terms of use, product policies, and disclosures, and implement related processes, and jump in where needed – no job is too big or too small – our team-oriented approach heavily leverages “other duties as assigned” 
  • Stay up-to-date on applicable financial services, consumer protection, advertising, and privacy laws and regulations to ensure an ongoing ability to provide sound advice
  • Respond promptly to a wide range of legal requests and coordinate closely with legal department colleagues and others

What We're Looking For:

  • 4+ years of legal experience is ideal, including in a product counseling role, preferably at a FinTech or other software or technology services companies
  • J. D. degree (with at least one State Bar membership) with Subject matter expertise with consumer financial products, including payments and lending 
  • Experience with launching financial services products and advising on the legal and regulatory aspects of product development in the space
  • Fluency translating legal advice into actionable guidance for innovative product and business teams
  • Experience working with and presenting to C-suite and VP-level leadership
  • Familiarity with financial services laws including regulatory regimes administered by State banking departments, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Federal Trade Commission, and more general consumer protection concepts/laws 
  • Advanced analytic ability with experience owning projects from concept to finish
  • Strong business-oriented judgment and the ability to analyze problems, propose solutions, and provide advice that is creative, practical, and legally acceptable, taking into account the needs and objectives of the business
  • The ability to manage a diverse and complex workload while maintaining priorities, managing deadlines and ambiguity
  • A proactive and problem-solving orientation
  • The desire to work on a small team focused on excellence and collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders to overcome complex challenges.
  • A collaborative style with the ability to work with little supervision
