We are seeking an experienced and highly technical Director of Data Engineering to establish and lead our data engineering function. As the Director of Data Engineering, you will report directly to the Head of Data and play a pivotal role in driving our data strategy, ensuring effective data utilization, and fostering data-driven decision-making across the organization. Your team will be at the heart of critical functions, collaborating with Product, Finance, Engineering, Operations, IT, Marketing, and People teams. 

This role can be both remote or hybrid based out of our downtown Chicago office. 

About the Role: 

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive plan to enhance the effectiveness, robustness and security of the Double Good data platform 
  • Architect and drive the overall data engineering strategy and roadmap for relevant processes, systems, tools, and capabilities required to build and maintain our core data assets. This includes an emerging Snowflake data warehouse, custom Postgres applications, data ingestion workflows, dbt for transformation, and managing relevant vendor relationships
  • Operate as a player-coach and be a hands-on technical expert in Modern Data Stack - Cloud Data Warehouse Management for Snowflake, Data Transformation with dbt and the Data Ingestion, Orchestration, Observability workflows 
  • Build and coach a world-class data engineering team that is capable of building central excellence while operating in a cross-functional team structure 
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with Product & Engineering teams to leverage best practices in areas like Data Infrastructure, Architecture, CI/CD and Data Privacy 
  • Implement our new data governance strategy and champion data democratization to improve data access and insights for all stakeholders 

Experience & Skills We Value: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Tech-related field; Master's degree is a plus. ● Minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience in data engineering and data management, with a strong exposure to data analytics & BI ● Passion for tackling complex business, system, and data challenges, with a continuous drive for innovation. 
  • Proven career progression, including technical expertise in data engineering, modern data stack, BI systems, and proficiency in SQL, Python, etc. 
  • Exceptional communication skills with an ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences

Nice to Have and/or You'll Learn: 

  • Experience building systems that scale at a hyper-growth startup ● Significant experience working with and leading robust software systems with a high data output. 
  • Experience with ERP conversion or integration projects will be advantageous.
