Summary

We are launching a new venture to empower fast-growing financial companies by managing risks and fighting fraudsters in a very novel way. We are looking for a highly motivated Co-Founder CTO to bring us there. This person will co-create and hold the product vision of the company and will build and grow the engineering and product teams to deliver amazing products.

Please note: This is not an employee opportunity at Diagram Ventures but in a new company created through our venture studio model. This company will be independent of Diagram Ventures, and the founding team will receive the majority of the equity in the venture.

The Opportunity

Rapid digitization of financial services and increased fintechs penetration are causing major risk management turbulence (the Federal Trade Commission reported 6.1B$ in fraud losses in 2021, up almost 80% from 2020). For fintechs, balancing growth and risks efficiently is a sophisticated and sensitive function that requires expertise, processes and tools. While fraud prevention and AML tools (SaaS, data vendors, etc.) are plenty in the marketplace, fintechs still need to build multi-disciplinary ops teams (analysts, data science) to monitor traffic and constantly improve their defences. However, staffing and training a risk team is hardly scalable and very costly. Companies can only implement changes reactively, allowing fraudsters to hop from platform to platform using the same schemes over and over again.

Our newly created company will supply fintechs with out-of-the-box specialized services that will give them immediate access to risk and fraud management best practices and ‘playbook’, while also providing them with the highly skilled resources to implement and operate an effective risk department. This will allow them to deliver products and acquire customers quicker and with peace of mind.

This business will use a mix of human expertise and tech-driven processes and data intelligence tools to deliver value and scale faster.

The co-founding CTO will be responsible for building the products that will be used by both internal and external clients. The internal clients are our client-serving operations team that will need those tools to increase their productivity and quality of their work: data management system, connection with external data vendors, data analytic models, secured databases, etc. External clients are the actual business clients who require APIs (with documentation), dashboards, etc.

Who we are looking for

We are assembling the dream team of entrepreneurs, technologists, and financial services experts, and we are now looking for an accomplished technical co-founder to lead the engineering build of our venture. If you are up for it, you will:

  • Work closely with the CEO and the other co-founder to define the company's product vision and strategy, including a detailed product roadmap with budgets and a hiring plan.
  • Be the ultimate accountable person for the execution and management of this plan (define metrics, set objectives, etc.).
  • Make strategic technical decisions like: engineering team composition, buy vs build, vendor selection and management, tech stack selection and architecture definition.
  • Work alongside a globally scattered operations team to update the roadmap according to their needs, priorities and issues with clients.
  • Able to attract, train and nurture talent to build strong engineering, data and product teams capable of delivering the products according to plan.
  • Build globally distributed engineering capabilities.
  • Also be very hand-ons on the build and delivery of the initial products
  • Work with the relevant resources to implement the best practices and standards in terms of data protection and privacy.

Background and experience

  • A proven track record in technical leadership roles: hiring, leading and growing a team, ideally in a start-up or scale-up environment in a founding position.
  • Experience building and scaling fintech or SaaS products, ideally with products that had advanced data management and security requirements (SOC, GDPR, PCI DSS, CCPA among others).

Other desirable assets:

  • Familiar with fraud and AML standards and regulations for financial institutions (BSA, AML, KYC/KYB, FinCEN, CFPB, etc.)
  • Familiar with the most common fraud tech stack: case managers, KYC providers, sanctions red lists, data vendors, etc.
  • Has sourced talent internationally and is comfortable with globally distributed teams.
