Who are we?
Dessa is a technology company transforming the way enterprises work with AI around the world. Based in Toronto, Dessa collaborates with enterprise teams across industries to design, build and deploy customized AI solutions that reinvent what’s possible for business. The company has a diverse and growing team of technical and business experts in applied AI, including Alex Krizhevsky, Dessa’s Technical Advisor and one of the field’s top contributors. Dessa’s creation of enterprise AI solutions is powered by our end-to-end platform, Foundations.
We are also a trusted player in the AI community, and have partnerships with industry leaders including NVIDIA, the Vector Institute, and Amazon Web Services. In 2017, we were named AI Company of the Year by the DFI Institute, and we received $9 million in Series A funding. Until the summer of 2018, the company was known as DeepLearni.ng.
Who are you?
You’re a software professional who’s passionate about your craft. You write clean code, you’re great at testing and refactoring, and you have a clue about algorithms and CS fundamentals.
You might have a long and distinguished track record, where you’ve demonstrated the ability to think strategically and mentor those around you. You might be a new university grad (or autodidact!) who’s done interesting things in your class projects and co-op terms. Or, you might be somewhere in between. At Dessa, we care a lot more about how—and why—you practice your craft than how long you’ve been doing it.
You’re a lifelong learner who stays current with new technologies, and you have delivered great software using more than one software stack. Right now, we’re using Python, React.js, Docker, Kubernetes, and a host of cloud technologies: you’ve either used these (or similar) things in the past, or you know you can pick them up readily in your first few months on the job because you’re good at learning new skills quickly. (In particular, part of your technical interview will be in Python.)
You’re effective at working very closely with teammates from many backgrounds on a mature Agile team.
You’re conversant enough in English to contribute to deep technical discussions in it, to work closely all day with other English speakers who have a variety of accents and skill levels, and to stay current with technical papers that are written in English. You can organize your thoughts well enough to express them coherently to other team members, and to wider audiences.
Inventing the future of AI sounds amazing to you, and you want in.
What would you do at Dessa?
We’re on a mission to help our clients do the impossible, and you’ll be building the tooling that allows them to do precisely that.
You’ll be a teammate on a high-maturity Agile team, doing pair programming, test-driven and behaviour-driven development, refactoring, simple emergent design, and much more. Do you prefer a variety of new problems to solve at regular intervals, or would you rather focus on one great product over a longer time? We’ve got you covered either way. We have opportunities on our core product teams, and on the team that supports our services engagements.
To build the tools that make Machine Learning Engineers awesome, we’ll need you to become a MLE, at least some of the time. We’ll teach you to do that, and we’ll give you time and support to use the tools you’re creating to do good in the world. You don’t need any previous ML or AI experience (though you’re very welcome if you have some), just a keen interest in the field.
In addition to the opportunities on our core product teams, we’re also looking for people with backgrounds in security, data engineering, client-facing roles, and team leadership; if you’re one of those folks, we’re especially interested in hearing from you.
What would you get out of joining us?
You’ll have the opportunity to work with purpose. You’ll be inventing the future of AI/ML development, and you’ll get to split your time between doing that and pursuing your own personal machine learning passion projects, with mentoring from our machine learning experts. Here’s a recent example.
You’ll also get to develop relationships with key machine learning experts and prominent industry figures from the greater community. This is a great way to get your foot in the door and build relevant the MLE experience required to pursue a career in technical AI roles.
Our engineering culture encourages self-expression, creativity, honesty, and learning. It doesn’t stress long hours or dysfunctional values. We have nice offices in downtown Toronto, directly on a transit line, where you’ll work hard for eight hours and then go home on time.
We offer a premium compensation package including base salary, bonus, and stock options, in addition to generous health benefits, healthy snacks, gym memberships, transit reimbursement, and more! We can also offer relocation and sponsorship for a work visa, if you need either or both of those things.
We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
