Adaptive3D is seeking an applications development engineer to work at the intersection of technology development, customer applications, and the deployment of additive manufacturing at production scales.

The objective of this position is to achieve implementation of Adaptive3D resins and Desktop Metal machinery solutions in production environments.

This person will be part of a small, dynamic, growing team based in Plano, Texas.

Job Description

  • The function of the Application Development Engineer (ADE) is to grow the Adaptive3D business through developing successful applications for customers.  The ADE is the engineering focal point for work to meet the customer’s technical needs in the selected market segment using Adaptive 3D’s materials and process solutions. 
  • The Application Development Engineer will work with counterparts in other Adaptive3D organizations and as an individual contributor.
  • The ADE will work with Consumer Segment Leads (CSL) to understand, define and document the market and customer needs.  The ADE and CSL will also work as a team to interface with the customer as application development programs are executed.
  • The ADE will define, manage, and execute projects in collaboration with Adaptive3D organizations including Design, Print Engineering and Analytical/Testing groups.
  • This position is an on-site job at the Adaptive3D headquarters in Plano, Texas.  Some travel may be required (5-8 times per year) for customer visits, trade shows and technical conferences.
  • The position reports to the Vice President of Engineering and Applications Development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be the Adaptive3D internal technical expert and focal for materials and applications technical requirements within the industrial and/or consumer market segment as well as supporting applications in other markets as needed.
  • Work with customer facing colleagues to develop strategies to develop business in market segments.
  • Work with customer facing colleagues to identify and prioritize new applications for current and future Adaptive 3D materials.
  • Understand, document, and communicate customer needs for specific projects including product and materials requirements.
  • Define materials requirements for target consumer market segments and specific applications.
  • Scope and define technical programs to engage and develop customer applications.
  • Define, manage, and help execute development and testing programs including coupon, subscale and part testing and validation. Produce project planning documentation including project requirements, test plans, schedules, and technical roadmaps. Work with internal colleagues on technical development projects.
  • Produce technical reports and documentation.
  • Support business case analyses with technical and process information as well as supporting and preparing cost analyses.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering:  Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Aeronautical Engineering, or related.  An advanced degree is preferred. 
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in engineering positions involving materials and process engineering and/or design engineering of applications using polymeric materials in the industrial market including power tools, consumer goods etc. 
  • Work experience with major producers of industrial and consumer products and tier one suppliers.
  • Experience selecting materials and processes for applications.
  • Experience with polymers, elastomers and foams.
  • Experience qualifying polymer parts and/or materials.
  • Experience defining and executing materials and parts testing and validation programs.
  • Experience designing, testing, validating and commercializing parts and products comprised of polymeric materials.
  • Experience in additive manufacturing and specifically additive manufacturing of polymeric materials.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of material standards/specifications and testing standards.
  • Knowledge of polymeric materials:  Fundamental knowledge of the major commercial polymer families, polymerization basics, polymer processing, mechanical and thermal properties of polymers and testing and characterization of polymers.
  • CAD Modelling capability with programs such as Solidworks, Catia, Pro-E/Creo, NTopology, Rhino, Grasshopper etc.
  • Familiarity of cost modelling and business case analysis.
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and orally.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively with all levels of coworkers and translate them into project outcomes.
  • Ability to work effectively in teams, maintain positive and professional relationships and contribute to a positive working culture.
