Desktop Metal, Inc. seeks a highly motivated individual to be primary responsibility for and lead the company’s worldwide indirect tax function and will assist in other tax areas as needed including U.S. and foreign tax compliance, mergers & acquisitions (“M&A”) due diligence, global and U.S. tax planning, transfer pricing, and general tax operations of a fast-paced, acquisitive, technology company.  The position is located at the Company’s Burlington, Massachusetts world headquarters.  This position reports directly to the Vice President, Tax & Treasury and will require an in-depth knowledge of global and U.S. indirect tax processes.  This individual must have a proven record of working within global tax teams and working closely with management operational leaders on both business and financial issues.  

 Responsibilities

The Indirect Tax Manager supports the non-income tax function, including U.S. sales/use, value-added tax, real/personal property, unclaimed property, and any other non-income taxes applicable to Desktop Metal’s global business activities.  However, the primary focus of this position will be ownership of U.S. Sales/Use and Global Value-Added Tax (“VAT”) business processes for compliance, reporting, technology, and client or vendor engagement. 

  • Manage, prepare and review transaction tax filings, including sales & use tax, value-added taxes, property tax, and unclaimed property
  • Manage multi-state and local sales and use tax audits, including gathering information, responding to audit requests, tax research and assisting in preparing appeals
  • Manage and develop indirect tax compliance processes
  • Research and document sales and use tax issues and keep current on transaction tax developments
  • Review monthly tax reconciliations for the tax liability accounts
  • Maintain documentation in accordance with Tax Department requirements and manage the Sarbanes-Oxley (“SARBOX”) compliance procedures as it relates to the tax accounting function
  • Ensure processes are in place to obtain sales tax exemption certificates and periodically audit those processes for compliance
  • Calculate and manage indirect tax exposure (and risks) under ASC 450-20 Accounting for Contingencies (a/k/a FAS 5)
  • Work with the VP, Tax & Treasury to develop and implement indirect tax planning opportunities and risk mitigation strategies
  • Work with the VP, Tax & Treasury, and business colleagues, to identify and negotiate tax refund and incentive opportunities for the company in the US and overseas.
  • Maintain and enhance the indirect tax processes and functions within the Company’s accounting system
  • Advise on indirect tax issues related to mergers and acquisitions and integration of acquired companies
  • Structure intercompany relationships and transactions
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the Direct tax colleagues, the business and other Corporate functions
  • Manage and perform special projects as needed.

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Assist in the preparation and/or review of U.S. federal, state and local income tax returns and estimated tax payments, extension, and notices
  • Assist in managing U.S. federal and state tax examinations
  • Assist in tax due diligence and analysis related to potential acquisition targets
  • Assist in global restructuring and other strategic tax planning projects
  • Assist in operational transfer pricing compliance

 Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree with emphasis in Accounting preferred
  • 8+ years or more of indirect tax experience in consulting and/or industry
  • Strong project management and organization skills
  • Knowledge of Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) standards and internal controls
  • Open and curious about new experiences and subject matters
  • Experience with the indirect tax issues facing ecommerce businesses
  • Strong customer and vendor focus; good listening, negotiation, and problem-resolution skills
  • Confidence, poise and diplomacy when interacting with all levels of management as well as with tax and other governmental authorities
  • Demonstrated passion and track record of delivering results in a rapidly changing business environment
  • Strong issue identification and mitigation skills
  • Ability to articulate complex concepts in a concise manner in both written and verbal presentations
  • Must have strong accounting, analytical, and research skills
  • High-level of energy, enthusiasm, and desire to grow your career
  • Excellent communication, analytical, problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Team-related skills showing the ability to interact effectively with senior business and tax executives, external professionals, government authorities, and internal customers (employees)

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field
  • Master in Taxation and/or CPA preferred
