About the Role

At Deliveroo we have a world-class machine learning team, with a mission to help the company make the best possible automated decision making at scale. Our work touches nearly all parts of how the company operates, from how a customer first discovers a great restaurant to the time it takes a rider to arrive at your door, and everything in between.

As Machine-Learning (ML) Engineers and Operations-Research Engineers, we work in cross-functional teams of engineers, data scientists, and product managers to build the algorithmic products that power the company. We are embedded in product teams, close to the business problems and with the autonomy to go after some of the hardest problems. ML engineers translate a fuzzy business problem to a concrete pipeline that we design and implement. We then work closely with the engineers to deploy our models to production and with data scientists to run experiments based on these algorithms.

At Deliveroo we solve problems that haven’t been solved before. We operate a three-sided marketplace between consumers, riders, and restaurants, and our work often touches the intersection between them. We prioritise a bias to simplicity over needless complexity, rigour and care over short-term patches, and incremental change informed by experimentation where feasible. Above all, we strive for a positive impact for all our customers and we will advocate for a non-ML solution when it makes more sense.

Our machine-learning tech stack includes Snowflake/dbt for our data warehouse, Python for most everything pipeline related and analysis (with a few parts still in R), TensorFlow for modelling, Kubernetes to orchestrate our workloads, and Jenkins to define our pipelines. And some of our most performance-critical algorithms are implemented in Rust.

Machine learning engineers at Deliveroo report into our ML engineering management team, and we have a strong, active machine learning and data science community, with guest lecturers; a robust technical review process; a career progression framework; and plenty of opportunities to learn new things. We have career pathways for both managers and individual contributors.

Our ML engineers come from many disciplines including mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering, computer science, operations research, and cognitive neuroscience. Some are formally trained in machine learning, some are not. We have team members from all over the world, and have a dedicated data science diversity committee.

We are looking for Machine Learning Engineering Managers to join our management team. Ideal candidates will:

  • Have experience managing machine learning engineers/data scientists and guiding their career development
  • Have built and deployed machine learning algorithms to production within product teams
  • Provide technical guidance and input on the design and implementation of machine learning algorithms
  • Have experience working with cross-functional teams and managing stakeholders throughout the business, helping them to identify opportunities and build roadmaps
  • Bring together a group of individuals from many different backgrounds and skill sets to form a cohesive team
  • Be comfortable working in an extremely fast, constantly changing environment, with incredibly high standards
  • Have a pragmatic, flexible approach, and most cares about achieving impact
  • [bonus] Knowledge and experience with experimentation

Please note that this list is our ideal candidate, if you have a slightly different profile but still feel you would be a good fit feel free to apply

Life at Deliveroo

We are a growing team, with very large impact, seeking to answer some of the most interesting questions out there. We move fast, we’re always looking for new ideas and we’re very transparent about the decisions we make and why we make them.

There are so many questions we need to answer and plenty more we haven’t even encountered. How do data and technology help restaurants to grow as consumer habits change? How can we predict what someone wants to order for dinner long before the idea has even crossed their mind? At Deliveroo these are just some of the tough problems we are solving - and there is no challenge that cannot be yours. No solution is owned by a particular team, which means the scope for growth and personal impact is enormous.

Benefits and Diversity

At Deliveroo we know that people are the heart of the business and we prioritise their welfare. We offer a wide range of competitive benefits in areas including health, family, finance, community, convenience, growth, time away and relocation.

We believe a great workplace is one that represents the world we live in and how beautifully diverse it can be. That means we have no judgement when it comes to any one of the things that make you who you are - your gender, race, sexuality, religion or a secret aversion to coriander. All you need is a passion for (most) food and a desire to be part of one of the fastest growing companies in an incredibly exciting space.
