We are looking for an experienced Director of Engineering with a background and passion for all aspects of security related to the development, deployment and execution of a large scale, web-based, SaaS platform and associated mobile applications. This includes secure web application development, cloud security, infrastructure and network security. 

Your recent roles will ideally include a leadership role in SecOps or Application Security. Alternatively, you may come from a DevOps or Application Engineering leadership role but have been significantly involved with a security program.

We have put the foundations in place for integrating security into our engineering organization (i.e. shift left), and now, we are looking for a strong leader to build the SecOps team and own this capability. You will work across both our Engineering and InfoSec/Governance/Risk & Compliance organizations to embed a security culture into our software engineering process.

This role will be based remotely anywhere in the United States. This position will report to the VP of DevSecOps.

Day in the Life

  • Define the vision for SecOps at Degreed
  • Define, plan and oversee security initiatives and processes
  • Track, produce, analyze, and act upon key metrics and milestones to continually uplift the security of the Degreed platform
  • Lead, motivate, and inspire both your SecOps team and the broader Engineering Organization to drive toward the SecOps vision
  • Recruit, retain, and develop application, cloud and infrastructure security engineers who form a cohesive team of 3-5 people
  • Manage and coach your team through challenges and career growth
  • Ensure your team’s success by removing roadblocks, addressing conflicts, and operating as its champion
  • Build and manage strong relationships with Product and Engineering leaders across the organization to build awareness and support for security to build SecOps into the cultural fabric of the organization
  • Collaborate with peers to creatively solve problems and drive department-wide objectives
  • Work closely with the InfoSec team to support internal and external security audits, penetration testing and certification processes
  • Other duties as assigned

Who You Are

  • 3+ years managing security and/or engineering teams
  • 7+ years experience in Engineering, DevOps and/or security (SecOps) across web, mobile, and API applications
  • You are able to attract great teammates and high performing engineers
  • You are able to both lead and manage and understand the difference between the two
  • You are passionate about helping engineers develop new skills and advance their careers
  • You excel at analyzing deep technical problems and coaching teams to the best solution

  • Experienced working remotely

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Degreed is a remote-first company, however our roles are open to in-office or flex work if you live in a city with a physical office location (when it is safe to return to the office). This role has the opportunity to operate 100% virtually from your home office. We primarily collaborate with our US and International colleagues through virtual meetings (Zoom), email, and Slack. In this role, you will be required to operate a laptop computer (PC or Mac available), computer software platforms, and other office productivity machinery as necessary.  Due to the nature of this role, you must be able to remain stationary for extended periods, and must be able to observe and interpret written and/or verbal communication.
