How you can help make a better world of work

Culture Amp’s Kaizen design system accepts contributions from engineers in many teams, but is primarily built and maintained by the Design System team of 6 engineers, 2 designers, and a delivery lead. The team’s most senior engineer, it’s tech lead, is moving on from the role, and we are looking for a design-system-obsessed lead engineer to pick up where she leaves off.

As a part of this team of amazing humans,

You will (the role)

  • write code (yes, this is a hands-on role!) to help to evolve and grow the Kaizen design system’s component library, built in React and TypeScript, its tooling and documentation,
  • lead the transition of our design system to a modern CSS-in-JS toolkit (currently it’s Sass CSS Modules and that’s getting old), and
  • support and grow the other engineers who contribute to Kaizen – especially the five other engineers in your team.

You have (technical skills)

  • a demonstrated interest in UI component libraries, and are motivated to build a successful design system to help Culture Amp succeed,
  • familiarity with JavaScript tools and build systems (NPM/Yarn/PNPM, Lerna, Webpack, Babel, TypeScript, etc.) as they apply to component library package publishing, and
  • proven interest or expertise in web platform fundamentals (HTML, CSS, DOM, accessibility, performance, responsive design) and modern JavaScript frameworks (ideally React).

You are (human skills)

  • an avid learner, constantly researching best practices, and emerging tech and patterns in the design systems space,
  • a strong communicator, because much of this work involves cross-team collaboration and discussion, with experience giving feedback (especially in code reviews), teaching and pairing,
  • comfortable leading the growth of a team of engineers, breaking down large projects into discrete chunks, assigning work based on the skills and learning opportunities of a team, fostering good collaboration and quality-assurance practices like pairing and code reviews,
  • optionally experienced maintaining a long-running project with an “internal open source” contribution model,
  • and someone who shares our passion for making a better world of work.

You should love crafting beautifully designed and intuitive user experiences, and believe that creating well-tested, clean code is just as important for the front end as the back end. You should enjoy being surrounded by talented engineers, learning from others, as well as contributing to their development.

Our teams are remote-friendly, and all embrace flexible working arrangements. We use GitHub to collaborate and review each other's code as pull requests. We deliver to production via continuous integration and delivery using Buildkite (or GitHub Actions where Buildkite is not a great fit).

Research shows that candidates from underrepresented backgrounds often don’t apply for roles unless they meet all the criteria — unlike majority candidates that meet significantly fewer of the requirements.

We strongly encourage you to apply if you’re at all interested: we’d love to learn how you can amplify our team with your unique experience!

We believe that inclusive businesses are better, not only for company performance, but for the world. We have a strong commitment to anti-racism and lead by example. Every step we make as a business towards anti-racism is another step we can take to support our customers in making a better world (of work). View our current commitments to anti-racism.

We ensure you have the tools and support you need to thrive, both inside and outside of work:

  • A MacBook — for you to do great work where it suits you
  • Share options — it’s important to us that everyone is an owner and can share in our success
  • Excellent parental leave and in-work support program — for those starting or growing their family
  • Flexible working arrangements — wherever we can we aim to make work support the life you want to lead
  • Fun and inclusive digital and (in the future) in-person events

And most importantly: an opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives.
