We're Cruise, a self-driving service designed for the cities we love.

We’re building the world’s most advanced, self-driving vehicles to safely connect people to the places, things, and experiences they care about. We believe self-driving vehicles will help save lives, reshape cities, give back time in transit, and restore freedom of movement for many.

Cruisers have the opportunity to grow and develop while learning from leaders at the forefront of their fields. With a culture of internal mobility, there's an opportunity to thrive in a variety of disciplines. This is a place for dreamers and doers to succeed.

If you are looking to play a part in making a positive impact in the world by advancing the revolutionary work of self-driving cars, join us.

About the Role:

The Principal Software Engineer at Cruise is an experienced leader with a passion for autonomous vehicles. The ideal candidate will have a very deep knowledge of motion planning as applied to driverless cars or in other robotics applications and especially deep optimization experience. In this role you well help direct the future of the engineering team through architecting, prototyping and developing world class AV solutions.

At Cruise, we believe in engineering leaders who remain deeply technical, and understand the challenges their teams are facing. The ideal candidate will be comfortable switching context from designing elegant software architectures, to defining how to test, benchmark and debug complex systems, and mentor staff and senior software engineers.

About the MP&C Team:

The MP&C engineering team is responsible for the software and algorithms that make the vehicle select and follow appropriate trajectories in a safe, accurate, and reliable manner. This includes tractional approaches to motion planning including convex optimization, numerical methods, sample based planning, as well as others.

Scope includes:

  • Development of high-performance (low latency) algorithms motion planning and control
  • Development of reusable optimization engines and libraries
  • Leading analysis to better understand how the system works and drive new solutions in both architecture and algorithms

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Work with executive leadership to set the technology direction for robotics solutions
  • Define technical vision for mission-critical parts of the AV robotics system
  • Architect, design, and implement robotic software applications, infrastructure, and tools
  • Lead large initiatives involving many stakeholders by driving impact analysis, and ensuring alignment with (and existence of) the larger architectural roadmap
  • Work across teams to ensure that the joint architecture across the stack is coherent and is capable of solving relevant problems
  • Providing technical leadership, guidance and mentorship to our robotics senior+ engineers as they propose, prototype, evaluate, and iterate solutions, as well as through their career progression
  • Formulate solutions that target Cruise’s top robotics opportunities and build prototypes to explore new scenarios and optimizations of existing solutions
  • Define testing strategy (incl. subsystem testing, integration testing, road testing) for Robotics
  • Maintain alignment through effective communication
  • Lead design and code review
  • Lead by example - set standards for code, design, and development processes across the organization
  • Maintain very high-quality bar in projects from the start and champion quality improvements by implementing better technical practices
