About the role: 

The Senior Thermal Engineer is responsible for system level design and release of components and systems for Cruise’s automated driving hardware platform both in prototype and production environment. This team is responsible for the hardware platform as a whole which encompasses major subsystems such as the roof module, compute suite, and the sensor suite. A successful addition to the team in this position will generally have a breadth of design engineering interests and capabilities as well as a focused expertise in thermal systems required for highly sensitive electronic components in an automotive or similar environment.


Day-to-day responsibilities include:
  • Design optimal thermal solutions and drive the design from concept to production verification. 

  • Derive requirements and specifications for the thermal systems and components

  • Drive thermal systems design including airflow management, coolant flow management, and thermal system integration.

  • Strong working knowledge of CFD analysis including excellent knowledge of at least one program (e.g. IcePak, FloTHERM XT) is crucial. 

  • Create test plans and guide the thermal testing that provides accurate insight into the system

  • Strong experience in working with overseas manufacturers, experience in leading outside component suppliers, and manufacturing partners.

  • Design for the appropriate manufacturing process based on quantity estimates

You should apply for this role if you have the following qualifications

  • BSME minimum and higher in mechanical engineering or equivalent  

  • 5+ years of industry experience

  • Able to deliver with little oversight

  • Strong communicator

  • Experience in complex thermal systems for electromechanical systems

  • Strong experience with CFD

  • Strong experience in design of air and liquid cooling systems (cold plates) in automotive and/or consumer electronics

  • Strong fundamental knowledge of thermal engineering theory and design

  • Experience with medium to high volume production of thermal systems

  • Knowledge of relevant manufacturing processes and a variety of engineering materials

  • Knowledge of standard manufacturing processes

  • Knowledge of common material properties
