About the role: 

Cruise is looking for a Sensor Layout Engineer to help us develop and integrate next-generation high-performance sensors to our vehicles that enable autonomous driving. The Sensor Layout Engineer interacts with hardware engineering and systems engineering teams and works to build models and sensor layouts to optimize sensor coverage and establish cross-sensor criteria for detection, classification, and free-space. The Sensor Layout Engineer works with the latest in leading edge sensors such as LiDAR, RADAR, camera, and acoustics/ultrasonics.

In this role you will use software tools to study and optimize sensor fields of view and work with hardware, systems, and perception engineers to validate sensor layout and performance.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Develop and work with sensor and vehicle CAD models to optimize sensor layouts
  • Perform in-depth sensor field of view studies and validate sensor placement
  • Build environmental models that include impacts of weather
  • Work with our manufacturing partners to integrate sensors and validate placement and mounting requirements
  • Improve the capability of our modeling tools
  • Evaluate new and existing sensor technologies and their impact on system performance
  • Work closely with partners and suppliers to ensure timely, effective, sensor solutions

You should apply for this role if you have the following qualifications:

  • BS, MS, or PhD in engineering, optics, science, or a related field
  • 5+ years of industry experience
  • Experience integrating sensors such as LiDAR, RADAR, camera, or acoustics/ultrasonics
  • Proficiency in CAD tools such as NX, Solidworks, CATIA, etc.
  • Experience with analyzing data and developing tools in Matlab and Python
  • Experience with scripting to accelerate modeling and analysis
  • Strong communication skills, especially when presenting visual information
  • Ability to adapt and operate under ambiguity
  • Ability to identify and act on opportunities to improve processes and increase efficiency

Bonus Points!

  • Experience with Unreal Engine
  • Experience working with automotive OEMs, and Tier 1 and 2 suppliers
  • Experience with electro-optical systems design (E.g., Zemax, Fred, Comsol)
  • Experience with CV algorithms and CNN based approaches for detection and classification tasks
  • Experience with sensor calibration
