About the role:

Cruise is looking for a Systems Engineering Lead to drive our AV Health and Diagnostics strategy and execution. As our team leader, we need you to help with the requirements management, analysis, and optimization of hardware and software failures, how we centrally manage aggregation and fault tolerance, integrate system safety across our systems-specific groups, and validate fail-operation to a minimum risk condition.

As a Systems Engineering Lead on the Autonomous Vehicle Integrity team at Cruise, you’ll have the chance to work at the intersection of hardware, software and AV technology and have a hand in nearly every component of a technically sophisticated autonomous system. You will also get to navigate uncharted territory in how to evaluate and test fail-operation absent a human controlling a vehicle and how best to quantify success.

This is a great opportunity for individuals to apply transferable skills and experience from a crossover industry, such as aerospace/avionics, UAVs / drones, robotics, automated manufacturing, or medical instrumentation.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Principal contact for all department leads for how to handle fail-operation to align work to the program schedule and ensure task delivery
  • Support development and management of Systems Engineering practices at Cruise
  • Lead, mentor and enable the success of a growing Systems Engineering team
  • Report effort estimates for requirements delivery and guide program for scope of new programs or product requests from business.
  • Empower Systems Engineers on the team, connecting them to mentors, customers, or org leaders as needed.
  • Integrate System Safety analyses and results throughout the Systems Engineering organization
  • Develop and provide framework for diagnostics input to manage fault tolerance at a vehicle level and align strategy and execution with GM partners
  • Maintain a healthy retention ratio via ensuring Systems Engineers remain motivated through challenging work without burning out.
  • Own the continuous performance evaluation and career development of their Systems Engineers. Recognize and grow top performers to the next level.
  • Assist with hiring the best talent for their team to raise the performance bar.
  • Effectively onboard other team members (including more senior new members) via explaining the big picture, operational flow, key stakeholders, and customers of their products.
  • Contribute to strategic hiring across the company, and provide accurate assessments for hiring and promotions of potential and current team members

You should apply for this role if you have the following qualifications:

  • BS or MS, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or another relevant engineering field
  • 7+ years of industry experience in implementing, managing and configuring electronic control systems such as vehicle navigation and tracking systems, infotainment, hands-free (Bluetooth, wireless) solutions
  • Experience taking requirements from R&D and design to shipping and large-scale production
  • Ability to understand complex technical systems, specifically relating to vehicle components and automotive communications
  • Knowledge of distributed systems & software architectures for automotive designs, their multiple abstraction layers, and their interdependencies
  • Strong technical and nontechnical communication skills
  • Solid presentation, writing and documentation skills
  • Ability to identify and act on opportunities to improve processes and increase efficiency
  • Functional safety requirements (ISO 26262) and automotive quality requirements (ISO/TS 16949)
  • CAN vehicle communication protocol and diagnostics, microprocessors, automotive ECU, electrical/electronic hardware, embedded software, hardware troubleshooting
  • Automotive vehicle mechanical and electrical system architectures (i.e. distributed vs centralized control systems)

Bonus points!

  • Experience with robotics or autonomous vehicles
  • Previous Lead experience
  • Experience with machine learned applications
  • Experience with transportation engineering or civil engineering
  • Experience working in a regulated environment
  • Skilled in cross-functional team communication; scrum and agile techniques
