The New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA) is a not-for-profit service and research organization. Operating under a contract with the City of New York, CJA provides pretrial services to about 200,000 persons arrested annually in New York City. Information collected about these arrestees and subsequent case processing is maintained in a computerized database. The Agency uses this database to conduct descriptive and evaluation research on arrestee characteristics, case processing and court outcomes, and on issues in criminal justice policy in New York City.

 

The New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA) seeks one or more Research Analyst(s) with strong quantitative data analysis skills to join the Research Department. Using CJA’s large database of arrest and case processing information, Research Analysts will enhance CJA’s work in risk assessment, court date notification, bail expediting, and other projects.

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Research Analysts are responsible for:

  • Assisting project directors in the design of research projects
  • Cleaning data and managing complex datasets
  • Producing high-quality analyses of quantitative data using SPSS
  • Assisting with the writing of research reports
  • Preparing statistical tables and graphics
  • Supervising junior research project staff members, as needed
  • Delivering presentations at conferences and other professional meetings
  • Participating in Departmental and Agency activities through ongoing discussion and collaboration with colleagues

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The position requires a Ph.D. in criminal justice, sociology, political science, economics, psychology, data science or related field, with a strong interest in criminal justice.  Applicants must have strong methodological and statistical abilities, including SPSS programming experience. Additionally, knowledge of other quantitative software (such as R or Stata) or qualitative research experience would be advantageous. Excellent oral communication and writing skills are essential, as is the ability to work on multiple projects independently and collaboratively under deadline. Must be adept at data cleaning, solving data anomalies, and managing large datasets. Good interpersonal skills are also required.
