The Risk and Payments data science team is on a mission to enhance the Credit Karma Money product and service experience for members, by optimizing existing features and enabling new features while protecting members and their money from fraud, through the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions.  As Credit Karma Money grows, it’s more important than ever that we continue to build world-class risk and payment capabilities within our data infrastructure.

We are looking for an innovative, experienced and hands-on Staff Data Scientist to join our effort to help Credit Karma Money members achieve their financial goals.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide technical leadership for the Risk & Payments Data Science team by enhancing the impact of others and playing an active role in fostering a culture of ownership and autonomy.
  • Lead the credit risk data science initiatives for the new and evolving CK Money product offerings focusing on the lending domain, including complete hands-on ownership of the model lifecycle, ownership of success and key results at the program-level, and driving the technical strategy and strategic decisioning roadmap across all involved teams.
  • Partner with colleagues throughout the organization to identify high-impact opportunities to leverage and utilize data science models to best suit the business needs, including contributing to strategies which balance revenue and risk.
  • Contribute to the evolution of our data and machine learning infrastructure to improve efficiency and effectiveness of data science solutions
  • Contribute to the design and execution of a cohesive data strategy (evaluating, obtaining, accessing and optimally storing data) across all data users
  • Represent the team and Credit Karma in internal and external forums such as executive level presentations, conferences, speaking engagements and meetups, and act as a talent magnet and spokesperson in such forums.  
  • Research and implement practical and creative machine learning and statistical approaches suitable for our fast-paced, growing environment.

Minimum Basic Requirement:

  • Advanced Degree (Ph.D. / MS) in Computer Science, Data Science, AI, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or a related quantitative discipline
  • 6-8+ years of experience in Data Science / Machine Learning and related areas
  • Relevant work experience in credit risk and/or financial fraud risk, with deep understanding of payment systems, money movement products, and banking, finance, credit bureau, and fraud detection data
  • Experience and deep understanding of a variety of machine learning techniques, including but not limited to, deep learning, tree-based models, reinforcement learning, clustering, time series, causal analysis, and natural language processing
  • Proficiency in deep learning ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.  
  • Ability to quickly develop a deep statistical understanding of large, complex datasets
  • Expertise in designing and building efficient and reusable data pipelines and framework for machine learning models
  • Authoritative knowledge of Python and SQL
  • Strong business problem solving, communication and collaboration skills
  • Ambitious, results oriented, hardworking, team player, innovator and creative thinker

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work experience with public cloud platforms (especially GCP), Apache airflow, Vertex AI, unsupervised machine learning, anomaly detection, Scala, data-driven strategy design and optimization
  • Experience in MLOps infrastructure and tooling
  • Experience in graph modeling (GNNs)
  • Experience with experimentation design and analysis

Pay Transparency Notice: Credit Karma’s mission of championing financial progress for all starts from within. That’s why we implemented role-based compensation, which ensures people who are in the same role receive the same pay with variations for geographic location only. It’s all part of a more comprehensive DEI strategy that helps level the playing field. The base salary for this role is $331,066, plus equity and benefits.
