The Role You'll Play: 

The Database Engineer at CE will be responsible for optimizing the systems that power all of Consumer Edge’s product.  You’ll be collaborating with engineering, analytics, and data science teams to help define and iterate on the next generation of Consumer Edge’s product line.  You will work to identify bottlenecks in how CE operationalizes its data, and then write code and/or deploy infrastructure to address those gaps.  The ideal candidate, on top of championing DevOps practices, would actively contribute to the reliability & security of our databases, write automation and infrastructure code, and improve the resilience & business continuity of our systems.

Your Main Responsibilities: 

  • Enable the engineering team at Consumer Edge to scale effectively by making informed trade-offs around latency, cost, and other performance constraints
  • Drive and oversee workload analysis, performance benchmarking, cost optimization initiatives
  • Conduct deep-dives on product design and architecture driving performance and having a direct impact on product development
  • Identify and debug bottlenecks to improve end-user experience and evaluate efficient technological changes to reduce resource consumption and request latency
  • Build observability and nudging to proactively inform people about regression trends in latency, develop performance tests, and experiments for benchmarking
  • Build a great customer experience for people using your infrastructure
  • Work successfully with cross-functional teams across departments

We’re looking for someone with:

  • At least 3 years of experience in scalable distributed systems, systems architecture, and/or performance analysis and tuning of web-based applications at scale
  • In-depth knowledge of database systems internals including relational database design and distributed databases/MPP architectures
  • A proven track record of incident response and on-call process improvements
  • Experience debugging complex problems across the whole stack
  • Experience working independently, holding yourself and others to a high bar while developing and working on production systems

It would also be great if you had: 

  • Experience driving/building up an Infrastructure as Code culture
  • Experience working with/supporting/tuning external-facing APIs
  • Wide breadth of database experience (we currently use BigQuery, ClickHouse, and MySQL)
