Confidential is a well-funded digital news startup preparing to launch in Washington, D.C. this fall. Our goal is to create a radically different publication, one that uses a distinct set of formats to deliver a nuanced and comprehensive view of the most important stories of the day.  We are hiring journalists excited to get in on the ground floor and help us shape our identity.

The Podcast/Audio Producer will have three distinct roles within the organization: First, launching the audio delivery of written stories for the site. This will involve assessing the needs, recommending the appropriate technical systems for the work, and executing the plan in time for the September launch. Second, leading the production of a regular podcast series currently in development, and to be launched by year’s end. This series will feature key leaders of Confidential’s reporting and editorial teams. While those leaders will provide overall direction for the series, the producer will be expected to bring fresh storytelling ideas and methods to the series, as well as first-rate production skills. We are mindful that the podcast space is increasingly crowded; ideas for differentiation and distinction are essential. Third, the producer will help shape longer-term goals and work related to audio for the platform. The ideal candidate will bring creative ideas about production generally, in support of and in collaboration with the team of reporters and editors. 

Put differently, the ideal candidate is both an ace in technical terms and a creative storyteller, and thus an important and influential voice at the editorial table.  

That “table” will include top-tier journalists covering US politics, global affairs, the US and global economy, and issues ranging from technology to climate change to the scourge of misinformation around the world. 

Responsibilities:  

  • Produce Confidential podcast 
  • Participate in formal and informal brainstorms with fellow team members to put forward ideas regarding podcast content and other production elements as complements to the editorial work.
  • Collaborate with the senior editorial team to improve the audio representation of their work.
  • Experiment with story formats and approaches  
  • Help us build a robust, loyal audience (a core responsibility for all team members)  

Qualifications:  

  • Familiarity with news- and conversation-style podcasts
  • Expertise in editing audio 
  • Experience producing podcasts or assisting in the production process 
  • Commitment to viewing all stories through an equity lens
