What is the Role?

As the Dean of Special Education, you are an instructional leader who partners with teachers, instructional peers, families, the NYC DOE’s Committee on Special Education, and related service providers to ensure that our students with IEPs have access to their mandated programming. You will be responsible for leading the Special Education team at the Middle School to provide high quality, differentiated instruction to students with variable needs. Additionally, you will work with instructional leaders to ensure that classrooms are structured so that all students have access to rigorous, standards-aligned content. 

What You’ll Be Asked To Do

Operate with effectiveness by ensuring that Special Education systems are in compliance with all relevant NYS and NYC regulations and guidelines.

  • Manage identification process for students with classified or suspected disabilities in accordance with NYS and LEA regulations 
  • Work with school leadership and operations teams to ensure students are scheduled for all special education programming and accommodations in their IEPs 
  • Work with CSE, related service agencies, and para staffing agencies to secure and schedule mandated related services
  • Work with CSE to schedule and facilitate annual, triannual, and initial IEP meetings 
  • Write IEPs and manage quarterly goal tracking in SESIS 
  • Coordinate with the CSE and the Operations team to support with door to door bussing
  • Train and hold staff accountable for completing all required reporting for students with disabilities
  • Serve as the main point of communication for families of students with IEPs on all issues related to identification, testing, meetings, and educational needs

Deliver exceptional results by ensuring that all classrooms are implementing best practices to support variable learners. 

  • Contribute as a member of the school’s academic leadership team
  • Collaborate with instructional leaders to ensure that our instructional systems are planned to support variable learners during Tier 1 instruction
  • Analyze data trends regularly in order to plan for responsive student interventions  
  • Coordinate Response to Intervention (RTI) team and facilitate meetings 
  • Create and and execute professional development for teachers on best practices for supporting variable learners
  • Support the Multilingual Learner Coordinator in the identification and assessment of MLL students with disabilities
  • Collaborate with the ENL (English as a New Language) teacher to support learning in all content areas
  • Assist with proctoring the NYSITELL and NYSESLAT (assessment) and collecting HLQ forms (identification) 

Develop talent by creating high quality professional learning for all teachers. 

  • Create targeted development for 4-5 Special Education teachers
  • Coach and provide insightful feedback on strengths as well as opportunities for growth
  • Lead content team meetings for Special Education teachers; participate in STEM, humanities, and world languages content team meetings as needed

  • At least 3 years of experience teaching, coaching and developing IEPs

Coney Island Prep is a college preparatory public charter school in Brooklyn, New York. Benefits and Compensation

  • Employees at Coney Island Prep are provided with salaries that are highly competitive, set through a lens of equity, and based on an individual’s skills and experiences relevant to the role. The starting salary for this role is $90,000 to $95,000.
  • As a regular full time employee of Coney Island Prep, you will be eligible for benefits that include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance as well as a 403(b) retirement benefit package with match and Paid Family Leave.
