About Community Change and Community Change Action:

Community Change builds the power and capacity of low-income people, especially low-income people of color, to lead powerful and dynamic movements for social change. With our community-based partner groups, we bridge the grassroots and the national, supporting outsider strategies to disrupt the status quo while also building pathways to influence the insider conversation.

Our vision of a better world centers the leadership of impacted people of color to move our work on immigrant rights, economic justice, and racial equity, including a focus on jobs and housing, early childhood care and education, income supports, and immigration reform.

This position also supports Community Change Action, an affiliated 501(c)(4) advocacy organization. While motivated by the same core values – equity, inclusion, and justice – Community Change and Community Change Action operate independently of one another and each organization has its own board of directors.

Position Description:

In partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Community Change is launching an innovative and ambitious project to address the structural challenges of racism in health policy and systems. To do this, Community Change will align its longstanding history and expertise in racial equity alongside leading national and state-level partners to develop a vision and implementation strategies for health policy that are rooted in community and grassroots perspectives.

The new Health Equity Team within Community Change will rely on strategic planning, authentic partnerships, and experience in racial justice and health care policy to develop this vision and bring it to life. The position is designed to begin support a two-year project beginning in June 2024 through June 2026. The Senior Project Manager of Health Equity will report to the Director of Health Equity.

Specific expectations for the project include:

  • Development of a comprehensive project plan that incorporates staffing, evaluation and assessment models, partner lists, and curriculum design;
  • Implementation of the project plan with regular assessment and iteration that will lead to the creation of a vision for health policy that will dismantle the institutional and systemic components perpetuating inequities in health outcomes;
  • In-depth collaboration with national partners: Community Change, Grassroots Solutions, and Cornell Center for Health Equity, including the execution of at least one multi-day, in-person meeting of key project staff from national partners in the design phase;
  • Engagement of state-level partners to reach directly impacted communities with health-focused Idea Labs, a Community Change framework of community engagement, that will generate recommendations and input about needs to address racial disparities in health;
  • Management of an Advisory Council of policy experts.
  • Contribute to the continued growth and cultivation of existing and new funding sources to grow and sustain this body of work, in collaboration with the Institutional Advancement team.

This is a grant-funded position that may sunset at the end of the anticipated funding period. A portion of time will be spent working with Community Change's sister organization, Community Change Action.

Principal Responsibilities: 

The Senior Project Manager for Health Equity will rely on the responsibilities listed below to successfully fulfill the role. The accompanying Key Qualifications will be assessed in candidates as core competencies for the position.

Project Administration:

  • Serve as the core project manager for the Health Equity project activities, including timelines and scheduling, reporting, events, administrative support, and budgets.
  • Partner closely with the Director of Health Equity to ensure commitments are fulfilled in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Alongside the Director of Health Equity, prepare content and logistics for meetings and convenings. Track and oversee follow-up from all meetings.
  • Stay fully immersed in all aspects of the Health Equity project with ability to regularly report on progress and answer questions from stakeholders.
  • Administrative support including contracts management, travel and convening coordination, payment requests, reimbursements, and other project support.

Internal and External Communications:

  • Prioritize effective communication with the Health Equity team, national and state-level partners, funders, and Advisory Council, as well as the broader Community Change team.
  • Ensure consistent project updates and an active feedback loop with the appropriate constituencies.
  • Create initial drafts of funder reports and communications in partnership with the Director of Health Equity.

Budget Management:

  • Manage the project expenses and ensure fidelity to the approved project plans.
  • Communicate about budget progress regularly with the Health Equity Team.
  • Provide additional contract management, in collaboration with Finance Team
  • Work with Community Change’s Financial Operations Team to track spending progress.

Alignment with Community Change Mission:

  • Center the needs and voices of community members in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of the project.
  • Contribute to a vivid, people-centered narrative that illustrates the concrete experiences of health disparities that stem from institutional racism.
  • Bring a collaborative and partnership-oriented approach to working with colleagues in the Health Equity team and throughout Community Change.


  • Sharp attention to detail with experience overseeing project plans and supporting project leaders to effectively execute a strategy.
  • Experience using project management software or tools, with the ability to interpret those systems for project stakeholders.
  • Capacity to encourage action from colleagues and to hold the project team accountable to deadlines and deliverables.
  • Experience drafting project reports, memos, and other communication to reflect progress for donors and partners.
  • Strengths in communicating clearly, succinctly, and for a wide audience verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to take in a variety of materials related to policy, evaluation, curriculum design, and project management to synthesize and analyze for the initiative’s progress.
  • Experience developing a line-item budget and overseeing the revenue and expense monitoring for a program.
  • Ability to foresee and communicate potential risks or opportunities to colleagues and to identify appropriate responses.
  • Approach that centers collaboration, listening, learning, and humility.
  • Understanding of the intertwined relationship between community, power-building, policy, and research.

Supervisory Responsibility: No

Travel Requirements: Up to 40%.

Salary and Benefits: Salary range of 90,000-$110,000 annually. Community Change also offers an excellent benefits package, which includes 4 weeks of annual paid vacation; additional paid holiday leave between December 24 and January 1; 8% employer contribution to retirement account after six months of employment (and 3% employer contribution for the first 6 months); and a choice of generous health insurance plans. Classification: Community Change recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is included in Community Change's bargaining unit and covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Location: This is a remote position, with the ability to be based anywhere in the U.S. Staff based outside of the D.C. area work from home offices or from designated shared office spaces.
