Overview:

The Director, Medical Science Liaisons (MSL) is responsible for US field medical team management and oversight of the MSL field operations and function.  This is a high visibility position responsible for determining and executing the Medical Affairs field strategy.  This role is focused heavily on establishing and maintaining external professional relationships and engaging in scientific exchange with health care professional (HCPs), Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), payers, and clinical investigators in the oncology space through the MSL team.  This individual will ensure the pull through of key medical and scientific messaging, further the knowledge and appropriate use of Coherus’ products, and further the company’s understanding of unmet medical needs in research and clinical development areas.  Internally, this individual is a key leader in Medical Affairs with direct accountability for the performance of the Medical Affairs field team. This individual will create and maintain metrics, business processes and lead key strategic, cross-functional projects.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • The recruitment, hiring, training, development, and retainment of a high-performing team of field-based MSLs
  • Develop and implement strategic MSL field/territory plans and objectives in alignment with Medical Affairs and corporate initiatives; oversee execution of these plans
  • Lead the identification of and interactions with KOLs in designated disease areas and/or geography on a national and regional level and, when appropriate, on a local community level
  • Oversee appropriate scientific exchange with the external medical community of HCPs, KOLs, and investigators through robust and balanced communication of medical and scientific information on the company’s pipeline programs and marketed products, including disease state (as applicable)
  • Ensure appropriate representation and discussion of medical and scientific information on the company’s products in settings such as advisory boards, presentations to payers, formulary decision makers
  • Direct MSL attendance and coverage at congresses and meetings, including contributing to meeting planning efforts through close collaboration with internal colleagues
  • Monitor the competitive environment to sustain expertise in therapeutic area treatment management and new therapies, competitive products, and features, and provide feedback to the Medical Affairs leadership team on specific initiatives
  • Gain customer insights, opinions and ensure regular sharing of this feedback to internal colleagues such that continual improvements to processes and materials can be implemented, potential business opportunities can be realized, company strategy regarding clinical research, trials are informed, and/or KOL relationship(s) developed
  • Connect with internal stakeholders to ensure strategic and tactical alignment of the MSL team both within the wider Medical Affairs organization, and with other company departments including Clinical Development and Commercial
  • Create, execute, and maintain policies, SOPs, and processes to guide daily operations of the MSL team
  • Ensure and enforce compliant and appropriate practices in all HCP interactions
  • Develop MSL appropriate goals and objectives and assessment processes to track the success of the MSL team and function and report metrics to Medical Affairs leadership team
  • Manage overall MSL budget and the administrative aspects of the team
  • Provide appropriate mentoring and coaching to direct reports with respect to technical skills, business acumen/planning, and effective regional management, including frequent field visits with the MSL team; manage individual and team performance
  • Develop and maintain scientific, clinical and therapeutic expertise in the disease states of interest
  • Strong team player who is highly collaborative and can effectively interface with Commercial and Marketing teams, including partnering with each Regional Sales Director and their teams, and aid in training of staff as needed
  • Other duties as needed

REQUIREMENTS: Education, Skills and Experience:

  • Doctoral degree (PhD, PharmD, or MD) required
  • 10+ years relevant pharmaceutical/biotech experience as a MSL with 5+ years of experience developing and managing a field based MSL team with a track record of success
  • 5+ years prior working experience in oncology and oncology supportive care (total experience will be considered)
  • A well-established KOL oncology network is strongly preferred
  • Ability to set strategy, make appropriate decisions to operationalize and move key projects forward, assess performance, and drive excellence while motivating and influencing teams
  • Successful record of managing multiple priorities and large and complex projects with minimal oversight with flexibility to changing priorities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, with established competencies in relationship management and working with cross-functional teams
  • Excellent ability in searching and interpreting medical literature
  • Full understanding of compliance related to interactions with HCPs, along with knowledge of applicable legal and regulatory guidelines governing Medical Affairs field-based activities
  • Demonstrated project management ability
  • Ability to travel (at least 50% of time)

The Base Salary Range for this position is $190,000 - $290.000 Coherus considers various factors, including professional background and work experience, when determining base pay. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary.
