Who You Are

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Backend Engineer to join our dynamic team. As a member of Clair’s tech team, you’ll be responsible for developing and maintaining critical components of all of Clair’s systems. The code you develop will directly shape how millions of hourly workers unlock an untapped credit source: their earned wages. We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer who is excited to contribute to complex systems such as Clair’s lending program. You have a sense for small details to help us build beautiful products that our customers love to use, and you are passionate about our client's mission and empathize with our users and how they'll use our products.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with backend programming, particularly with PHP and the Laravel framework. You will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining our web applications' server-side logic, ensuring high performance and responsiveness to requests from the front end and external systems.

If you are an independent, self-motivated, and productive engineer, come join a stellar team of engineers to help shape the financial future of America’s workforce!

What You'll Do

  • Lead end-to-end design of product requirements and develop high-quality software that can be easily understood and leveraged by others.
  • Influence the features and direction of the platform with your own ideas and proactively identify opportunities to improve both business and product development processes.
  • Grow with the company as a technical leader, helping to shape our systems and culture by staying updated on latest industry trends and technologies.
  • Work cross-functionally and collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain and monitor software, conduct regular code reviews, and write detailed documentation to ensure reliability and best coding standards across our platform.

Required Experience/Qualifications

  • At least 5 years experience building, launching and maintaining products at scale, both on the backend and frontend (ideally with experience at a venture-backed startup).
  • Expertise with PHP and ideally at least 3 years working specifically with the Laravel framework.
  • Strong understanding of OOP principles and design patterns, database management systems, and RESTful API design.
  • Experience in front end technologies is a plus; we use Vue and React.
  • Grit and adaptability to thrive with an early-stage team and navigate the unknown.
  • You’re independent, self-motivated and can stay efficient and productive on multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, written and verbal communication with an ability to influence decisions.
  • Ability to periodically travel to team headquarters in New York City or other locations for team meetings and company on-sites.
  • Bonus: Experience on a B2B or fintech product development team.

Race & Ethnicity Definitions

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

An "active duty wartime or campaign badge veteran" means a veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service during a war, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized under the laws administered by the Department of Defense.

An "Armed forces service medal veteran" means a veteran who, while serving on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service, participated in a United States military operation for which an Armed Forces service medal was awarded pursuant to Executive Order 12985.

OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
