Pay Range:  $71,661 – $93,159 annual compensation

Brief description for position:

A Code Compliance Supervisor job is available with the City of Fort Worth within its Animal Care Division. The City of Fort Worth’s Animal Care and Control division has three areas of operation: Shelter operations, Field services and our PetSmart adoption centers. Successful candidates will have experience with shelter operations, adoptions, animal behavior and will be highly skilled in customer service. The City of Fort Worth has a progressive animal welfare program that enjoys broad based support from elected officials, industry, residents, and animal welfare agencies.  At our Silcox Animal Care and Adoption Center, a group of City staff and private business professionals raised over $1 million for a new medical treatment ward that opened in October 2014 to supplement its surgical clinic where approximate 9,000 animals were neutered in 2015.  And in April of 2021, the city celebrated the grand opening of its new state of the art North Animal Campus paid for by a $13.5M bond program approved by the residents of Fort Worth in 2018.  The new campus is a fully equipped veterinary hospital for shelter pets along with five separate dog wards, each with 10 enrichment yards, a cat ward with windows and volunteer space overlooking the 7.5-acre campus.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED supplemented by specialized training in one or more of the following fields: animal welfare, public health, veterinary medicine.
  • Four (4) years of responsible experience in one or more of the following disciplines: animal welfare, public health, or veterinary medicine. Including one (1) year of administrative and supervisory experience.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Animal Control Officer Basic Certification and a State of Texas Euthanasia Certificate through the Texas Department of State Health Services within six (6) months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience in a municipal or non-profit animal shelter or veterinary clinic.
  • Knowledgeable of animal control local and State mandates/laws; humane care of animals.
  • Well-connected and responsive to community interests relative to animal welfare concerns.
  • Comprehensive understanding of animal behavior, including stress signals, enrichment techniques, and humane handling practices.
  • Certification or training in animal behavior, such as Fear Free Shelter Certification or a CPDT credential.

The Code Compliance Supervisor job responsibilities include:

  • Foster a Positive Workplace: Cultivate a team-oriented work environment by supporting collaboration, addressing conflicts proactively, and managing performance challenges constructively.
  • Prepare and Analyze Reports: Generate detailed reports on shelter metrics, operational efficiency, and program evaluations to provide data-driven insights for decision-making.
  • Respond to Community Concerns: Handle complaints and inquiries about animal-related issues, offering accurate information and exceptional internal and external customer service.
  • Behavioral Guidance: Provide expertise on managing animals with behavioral challenges, ensuring safe handling practices and implementing effective training or modification plans.
  • Ensure Humane Care Standards: Oversee that all animals receive appropriate daily care in compliance with humane practices.
  • Enforce Animal Regulations: Uphold city and state animal control laws, ensuring enforcement aligns with organizational policies and legal requirements.
  • Training and Development: Develop and facilitate training programs for staff on animal care, behavior, safety, and customer service.
  • Conduct or oversee thorough evaluations of animals to assess medical, behavioral, and social needs, and collaborate with staff to determine appropriate pathways to outcome.
  • Policy Development and Compliance: Review, update, and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure operational consistency and regulatory compliance.

Working Conditions

Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and intense noises.

Physical Demand

Medium work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
