The City of Fort Worth’s Log Cabin Village is looking for an enthusiastic, experienced Museum/Skilled Trades Technician II to maintain and preserve 19th-century buildings, ensuring that current and future generations can continue to enjoy this historic site in the heart of Fort Worth. The Museum Skilled Trades Tech II performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and technical tasks in a 19th-century living history museum including maintaining an inventory of multiple historic buildings and natural program areas and their needs.

The ideal candidate will be proactive in addressing site needs while working independently with minimal supervision. They will have demonstrated experience in basic methods of general construction, maintenance, and repair, along with general groundskeeping knowledge and abilities.

Log Cabin Village is a 19th-century living history museum dedicated to the preservation of frontier Texas. Owned and operated by the City of Fort Worth’s Park & Recreation Department, Log Cabin Village aspires to build connections to 19th-century Texas by providing educational opportunities and sensory experiences that are engaging, accurate, and as authentic as possible.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • HS diploma/GED.
  • Two (2) years responsible experience in facilities and grounds maintenance, custom carpentry, or other relevant skilled trades.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to obtain a Pesticide Applicator license within 12 months of hire and maintain license during length of employment.
  • Must be able to secure and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR certification within six (6) months of hire and maintain certification during length of employment.
  • Must pass Drug Screen, Physical.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of 19th century crafts/skills.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
  • Year-round outdoor work in non-climate-controlled conditions.
  • Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking and repetitive motions.
  • Requires extensive walking around the 2.5-acre site.

The Museum Skilled Trades Technician II job responsibilities include: 

  • Prepares the 2.5-acre site for daily operation by performing safety and security checks, unlocking/checking historic buildings, lighting the candle pot and woodstoves, and reporting any damage/tree/wildlife issues.
  • Assists with wildlife and pest mitigation, control, and removal (rats, raccoons, possums, armadillos, foxes, coyotes, etc.).
  • Assists in carrying out land management practices by planting and caring for trees, shrubs, and grasses, and invasive species control using both mechanical methods and herbicide application.
  • Maintains historic structures, developed grounds, roads, trails, and restrooms.
  • Maintains and repairs specialized historical interpretation equipment like spinning wheels, coffee grinders, treadle lathe, forge blower, etc.
  • Fabricates custom-designed items by blacksmithing and/or welding such as sign kiosks, tables, walking bridges, park benches, signs, pipe gates and fencing, and other related projects.
  • Fabricates custom exhibit items, historic style furniture, benches, items for sale in the museum store, and other related projects using both historic and modern carpentry methods.
  • Maintains minor equipment by checking tire pressures, greasing, checking air filters, and fluid levels, adding fluid when needed. Makes minor repairs to equipment.
  • Maintains and repairs boundary fences, large historic waterwheel/flume, herb garden/pergola, ponds/pond pumps, and split rail.
  • Coordinates and oversees landscaping projects for volunteer groups as well as large special interest groups.
  • Completes detailed weekly maintenance logs, checklists, and/or reports.
  • Assists with costing and purchasing of equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Makes oral presentations to special groups and audiences of all ages educating them about 19th-century architecture, lifeways, crafts, and the programs offered at Log Cabin Village. Assists with staff training, as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations, and workspace restrictions.

Physical Demand

Heavy Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
