A Meter Service Technician II job is available within the City of Fort Worth Water Department in the Meter Services section. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for conducting water meter asset surveys, identifying lead and galvanized materials, and managing survey work orders. You will play a crucial role in surveying both new and rehabilitated development areas, ensuring adherence to quality assurance and quality control standards for our Geographical Information Mapping System (GIS).

This position operates in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, responding promptly to the needs of over 296,000 Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI) meters that require diligent maintenance. You will also provide invaluable support to the Utility's IT team to enhance the GIS mapping of water meter assets.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Two (2) years of increasingly responsible water meter repair, installation, and reading experience
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, within six (6) months of employment, a Class C Water Distribution certification from the State of Texas Distribution certification from the State of Texas
  • Must be able to work rotational on call, after hours, including evenings, weekends holidays and overtime as needed
  • Must be able to pass a drug test and physical

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Previous plumbing, mechanical, utility, or construction field work experience
  • Knowledge and experience using a work order system
  • Bilingual
  • Basic computer skills

The Meter Services Technician II job responsibilities include: 

  • Performs installation and preventative maintenance on 1.5”-2” water meters, endpoints (radio transmitter), pipe fittings, valves, meter boxes and lids.
  • Programs connection of meter and endpoint to radio network and configures route and cycle information
  • Performs complex water services field investigations in response to customer inquiries, inspects condition of 1.5”-2” water meters and pipe fittings for installation, repair, or replacement. Identifies and reviews resource needs with appropriate management staff.
  • Assists in the installation and preventive maintenance on 3” and above water meters.
  • Assists in water meter projects performed by in-house staff and/or contractors.
  • Creates and completes electronic work order assignments. Confirms that all necessary information is included on the work order including accurate meter, register and smart point information.
  • Assists in monitoring and evaluating quality, responsiveness, efficiency and effectiveness of assigned field operations methods and procedures.
  • Assists in inspecting of maintenance, construction, repair and operational activities.
  • Assists in conducting inspections of Meter Services Technician I vehicles and tools.
  • Assists with training Meter Services Technician I. Communicates Meter Services Technician I productivity, operational needs, and inspects their and vehicles job related issues to Senior Meter Services Technician and/or Crew Leader.
  • Assists with special projects and performs other duties as required.

Working Conditions Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting. Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases and work space restrictions. Requires working outdoors in all-weather environments including wind, rain, snow, extreme cold, or high heat, fumes, etc. Frequently exposed to dangers related to plants, animals, insects, spiders, and snakes.

Heavy Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
