The Program Officer, Criminal Justice Grantmaking [PO] is based in Schusterman’s New York, NY. The PO assists the Senior Director by seeking, developing, recommending and managing grants that seek to end mass incarceration and confront its racist legacy through anti-racist policy change, improve opportunities for people impacted by the criminal legal system, and improve the health and safety of all communities. An experienced professional with organizational, financial and programmatic expertise, the PO helps maintain strategic partnerships with and provides technical assistance to grantees to help them achieve their goals.


• Contribute to strategy development for the Criminal Justice portfolio.
• Develop and steward relationships with other Schusterman entities and Schusterman grantees, program partners and participants.
• Conduct due diligence of grant applications, including both qualitative and quantitative analyses such as business plan analysis, market analysis, interviewing experts, benchmarking and financial modeling, etc. to meet Schusterman established standards and ensure alignment with Schusterman’s strategic initiatives and grantmaking strategy, as well as the potential grantee’s mission.
• Assist grantees in delivering on the grant goals, meeting agreed-to milestones and overcoming obstacles. Act as a thought partner to grantee staff.
• Project manage open grants, including regular check-ins with grantees, analyzing and summarizing grantee reports, etc.
• Make grant recommendations to senior staff.
• May represent Schusterman at conferences and/or meetings as well as assist leadership in execution of convenings and/or collaborative learning opportunities.
• Maintain relationships with external partners and grantees, some travel required.


The following qualifications are representative of the high level of demonstrated skills, maturity, judgment and ability to work with a wide range of constituencies required of Schusterman employees:

• A Bachelor’s degree is required.
• At least 6 years of professional experience working within the philanthropic and/or non-profit sector in criminal justice policy or a related area required.
• Individuals with lived experience with the criminal legal system encouraged to apply.
• Experience applying a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion lens to projects and programs preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems with creativity and with independence required.
• Demonstrated flexibility and resilience in dealing with ambiguity, strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize work based on minimal direction and multiple competing priorities required.
• Excellent verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills and ability to develop cooperative and effective working relationships with supervisory personnel, co-workers, colleagues, current grantees, potential grantees, other grantor organizations and the general public required.
• Excellent judgment, an ability to exercise discretion and tact in difficult or confidential situations and an ability to project a positive, professional image to the public required.
• PC skills (with proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint), as well as a thorough knowledge of basic web skills and comfort required.
• Ability to travel up to 25% domestically required.


Competitive salary based on experience and on Schusterman’s commitment to internal equity. A strong benefits package is also included. Schusterman does not cover relocation expenses for this position.
