Central Operations & Partners consists of our Brand & Communications, Community, Facilities, Finance, Infrastructure/IT Operations/Business Systems, Initiative Operations, People, Real Estate/Workplace/Facilities/Security, Research & Learning, and Ventures teams. These teams provide the essential operations, services, and strategies needed to support CZI’s progress toward achieving its mission to build a better future for everyone.

The Opportunity

The Payroll team is a small high energy group within the Finance team at CZI. We’re passionate about  providing efficient, accurate, and compliant payroll  operations to employees across all CZI initiatives and functions. We leverage world-class technology and systems, partnering closely with cross-functional teams to ensure employees are paid reliably and promptly.

As a Payroll Manager, you will serve as a key contributor to our team, overseeing all aspects of payroll processing and federal, state, and local tax compliance.  You will be critical in building and improving operational and technical payroll processes to support our diverse and dynamic workforce. This is a hands-on role where you will lead and mentor a dedicated team in a fast-paced environment. This role reports directly to the Assistant Controller, collaborates closely with cross-functional partners, and will directly manage two payroll managers. 

What You'll Do

  • Payroll Processing: Supervise daily payroll operations, including bi-weekly, monthly, and ad-hoc payrolls for multi-state employees. Provide guidance to payroll managers and serve as a backup for payroll processing.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations.
  • Systems Management: Implement and maintain payroll systems, including Workday Payroll and ADP Smart Compliance.
  • Process Improvement: Develop and implement payroll best practices, guidelines, and procedures in partnership with People and Business Systems teams. Optimize employee data and information flow.
  • Project Management: Lead and manage cross-functional payroll-related projects.
  • Audit Management: Own end-to-end payroll-related audits.
  • Policy Development: Develop, implement, and maintain key payroll policies and procedures, including internal control documentation and process improvements.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with various teams to support the payroll process and drive efficiencies and accuracy.
  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing payroll team.

What You'll Bring

  • Experience: 12+ years of relevant end-to-end global payroll processing experience, including 5+ years managing a payroll team. Exceptional work ethic, high accountability, and ownership.
  • Payroll Expertise: Deep understanding of payroll tax laws and regulations, and hands-on experience with multi-state payroll.
  • Systems Proficiency: Expert knowledge of Workday Payroll and ADP Smart Compliance. Experience with G-Suite is essential.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop a team. Possess excellent relationship-building and influence management skills.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization.  
  • Project Management Skills: Solid project management skills with a proven ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively. Demonstrated excellence in initiative, flexibility, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to analyze complex issues, resolve problems, and maintain meticulous attention to detail. 
  • Education: Bachelor's degree preferred (focus in accounting, finance, or related field is highly preferred).

Compensation

The Redwood City, CA base pay range for this role is $153,000 - $230,000. New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. Actual placement in range is based on job-related skills and experience, as evaluated throughout the interview process. Pay ranges outside Redwood City are adjusted based on cost of labor in each respective geographical market.
