The Opportunity

The Director of Movement and Capacity Building (MCB) will report to the Vice President of Strategic Initiatives as part of CZI’s Central Operations team. The Director leads cross-organizational efforts and programs that support grantees to make transformational change and build lasting infrastructure to reach their long-term goals The MCB team delivers training, consulting, and cohort- and movement-based infrastructure support for a wide range of grantees and partners.

The Director of MCB manages a team including an events and operations lead, administrative support, and MCB Strategists who work closely with initiative teams to develop and implement MCB strategies and offerings. The team works across all CZI Initiatives, partnering closely with Education, Science, and Community/Housing to achieve ambitious initiative goals.

In this role, the Director will be a strategic partner to CZI colleagues and grantees on topics of movement ecosystems, networks, and systems change. They will develop, oversee and execute org-wide as well as community-based and movement focused training and capacity building offerings for CZI grantees, and build and maintain central infrastructure for capacity building that the initiatives can leverage. They will lead a "community of practice" across the organization to ensure MCB Strategists and others doing capacity building work have thought partners and can learn from one another and share best practices. Finally, they will oversee the MCB grantmaking portfolio to grow and support the field of capacity building.

We are looking for an excellent manager who is committed to team and individual development and equity practice. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in training, organizing, coalition and movement building, and developing cross-sector partnerships. A background in grassroots change, advocacy and power building is important; experience in philanthropy and/or the tech sector is a plus, but not necessary.

You will

  • Manage both an operating and grantmaking budget to achieve program goals and support the practice, diversity and infrastructure of capacity building 
  • Manage a team of full time employees and contractors with excellent, inclusive management practices
  • Develop and execute movement and capacity building strategies to help initiative teams and grantees achieve their long term goals across all of CZI’s core portfolios (Education, Science, and Community & Housing) 
  • Lead the MCB team to execute robust capacity building programs for CZI grantees in the categories of Individual (i.e.,  diverse leadership development and resilience), Organizational (i.e., key building blocks for grantee success), Network (i.e., cohorts of grantees working on similar goals sharing resources and expertise), and Movement (i.e., coalitions of partners working together on the same goals to make system level change)
  • Work with internal teams to measure impact and codify best practices 
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and partner organizations to anticipate capacity building needs as an input to grants proposals, goals and metrics setting, etc
  • Work effectively within a highly-cross functional team, in a matrixed organization
  • Communicate and build strategy with the MCB team and with senior leadership, ensuring buy-in and generating approval
  • Serve as a senior MCB strategist within CZI and engage the broader philanthropic and training ecosystem
  • Model excellence, respect and empathy with the MCB team and others in the organization.

You have

  • 10+ years experience working as a senior-level manager, successfully driving cross-functional community organizing, capacity building work, and advocacy work
  • Excellent operator with experience managing a multi-facetted team, including managing budgets, short- and long-term roadmaps, and people management
  • Systems change expert (worked within government, advocacy, organizing) with hands-on experience leading and building diverse coalitions
  • Proven track record of building and executing complex, impactful and inclusive programs from the within the social impact space
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills, organizational awareness, and ability to communicate complex ideas to build alignment with others to accomplish objectives
  • Strong track record of implementing equity and inclusion practices in team management and external work 
  • Independant problem solver with strong prioritization and time management skills to work across multiple simultaneous projects and  with the ability to source resources to meet needs and move from strategy into execution
  • Experience running matrixed teams/programs within complex organizations
  • Strong interest in CZI’s core issue areas (Science, Education, and Community & Housing) and the intersection of racial equity and inclusion in these areas 

Preferred:

  • Hands-on training with a particular penchant for developing radically interactive curriculum for a diverse range of audiences and issue topics
  • Key relationships and understanding of current training organizations including but not limited to organizing/advocacy/systems change/racial justice/technology
  • Fluency in power building, community organizing and capacity building metrics
  • Experience in philanthropy and/or the tech sector
  • Ability to travel, as travel is likely for national events and conferences
