To cure, prevent, and treat all of human disease by the turn of the century, we need a much deeper mechanistic understanding of biological systems. In order to gain this understanding, we need to develop additional tools (both hardware and software) to visualize life’s processes at the necessary biological scales (systems, tissues, cells, proteins) and in the necessary context (e.g. protein interaction in cells, cell signaling in the living system), enable measurement and quantitative insights, and provide researcher access and training to these tools to make and build on each other’s discoveries.
As a Science Program Manager, Imaging, you will drive the execution of imaging initiatives aimed at achieving these goals. You will manage and assist the development and operations of grant programs to support Imaging, including programs in progress, planned, or future programs to be developed. You will coordinate closely with the rest of the CZI Science team, CZI Technology team, and the external community. You will be a public advocate of CZI’s mission and our priorities and you will contribute to shaping our strategic directions in this area.
The ideal candidate will have deep, hands-on expertise in biological and/or medical imaging. Key qualities are (1) experience with imaging technology development (2) a passion for community engagement and (3) strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and work across a diversity of expertise.
- Work closely with Science Program Officers, Data Scientists, and Technology Staff to help define and lead programs in imaging and represent them to the outside community
- Drive internal and external community engagement, including planning and running meetings and workshops, and engage in outreach to ensure connections to users, standards groups, and imaging communities
- Support the grant-making process for current and future programs, including selection, review, process, and relationship management
- Work closely with grantees to help drive imaging technology development projects.
- PhD degree or equivalent experience in biological imaging, medical imaging or similar field
- 3+ years of experience in physical or virtual community-building activities, including jamboree/hackathon planning, workshop or conference organization, hosting tutorials, etc.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and work with stakeholders from different backgrounds and at different career stages
- 3+ years of program management experience in a position such as staff scientist, principal investigator of a research laboratory, software developer, policy manager, product manager, or in another area of scientific practice or software development such as government, biotechnology, or philanthropy
- Strong understanding/experience with imaging technology development and/or medical imaging
