Our mission is to support science and technology that will help make it possible to cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by the end of the century. Interdisciplinary teams of physicians, biologists, computational scientists, and engineers can expand our understanding of the human body and illness — the science behind medicine. In the science initiative, CZI fosters collaboration between scientists and engineers, develops tools and technologies, and builds support for basic scientific research.
Our team is seeking interactive, interdisciplinary, and forward-looking Computational Biologists to advance our work in one or more of the areas of single-cell biology, microscopy and medical imaging, metagenomics, and neurodegeneration. You will bring expertise in one of these biological areas, and in modern computational and statistical methods including data analysis and open source software. Your primary function is to provide domain expertise to our grantmaking and to our grantees.
For the neurodegeneration program, this role will involve working with grantees in the neurodegeneration program including hands-on work such as data analysis and visualization, developing training and mentoring opportunities for grantees and their trainees, reviewing grant proposals, participating in and planning hackathons, and developing collaborations with external scientists. You will have the opportunity to mentor external scientists in the practice of computational science and collaboration, and guide them towards impactful contributions across our programs and projects. You will also have a role in informing our internal software projects to advance these areas.
- Join the team working on the Neurodegeneration Challenge Network: an interdisciplinary collaborative research Network focused on understanding fundamental mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, ALS and other degenerative conditions
- Mentor and support the work of the Neurodegeneration Challenge Network grantees, including providing computational expertise and consultation to grantees on projects; contributing to community building across the Network and supporting computational training and capacity building efforts for trainees
- Contribute to NDCN open science goals, such as sharing of data sets, code and resources
- Interact with grantees and other collaborators through meetings (e.g. workshops, hackathons), community surveys, analysis and visualization software, and data sharing infrastructure
- Participate in grantmaking to experimental and computational scientists as part of neurodegeneration program RFAs, as well as contribute your expertise to other CZI Science grants processes.
- Partner flexibly and responsively with other CZI science staff — people such as program officers, product managers, software engineers, and user experience researchers — and work toward aligned goals
- Engage intellectually with the scientific community and identify new opportunities for CZI by attending conferences, establishing working relationships with leading external scientists, and becoming a thought leader within your area of scientific responsibility
- Build bridges by providing scientific expertise to the members of the CZI tech team, and providing computational advice and quantitative expertise to the members of the CZI science program team
- Contribute to a collaborative, inclusive, and intellectually rigorous team culture
- 5+ years of experience in roles related to computational or quantitative biology, a PhD or an equivalent level of experience
- Direct experience in a discipline related to neurodegeneration, with preference for someone who has knowledge and experience of existing computational and data resources relevant to the neurodegeneration field and expertise in one or more core analytical approaches relevant to neurodegeneration (genomics, single-cell omics, image analysis, etc)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working with, and translating between, software and scientific teams
- Demonstrated ability to use and understand modern computational and statistical software tools (e.g. Python, R, Jupyter)
- Expertise in the core mathematical and statistical techniques commonly used in biology (including classical statistics, bioinformatics, machine learning, dimensionality reduction, etc.)
