As a Tech Lead Manager for the Criminal Justice program of the Justice & Opportunity Initiative, you will create technology products for communities, advocates, and practitioners within the criminal justice system.
In this role, you will help establish a strong technical foundation for a suite of criminal justice products. You will be expected to carry out core technical duties -- coding, debugging, code reviews, system & architecture design reviews, etc. -- while also mentoring and coaching more junior engineers. As our team goes from “0” to “1” you will be instrumental in shaping the engineering culture and practices of the team.
The suite of criminal justice-related products will include:
- Tools to support reform-minded prosecutors and improve prosecutorial decision-making
- Applications to support our growing portfolio of second chances work, including our recently announced Clean Slate agenda.
- Applications to support grassroots criminal justice advocacy organizations across the political spectrum — including bail funds, court watch programs, and participatory defense hubs -- who need to save time on their internal operations so they can spend more time on advocacy.

- Apply expert software development skills to a wide range of coding projects
- Create ad-hoc technology tools for external partners
- Suggest, collect and synthesize requirements and create effective product roadmap
- Clear communication skills among engineers and cross-functionally
- Experience with web development technologies (familiarity with Django and React is a plus)
- Experience with relational databases and alternative big data storage systems
- Familiarity with cloud-based services and offerings (AWS, Azure, GCP)
- Comfort using a linux-based development environment and implementing DevOps best practices (Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, Airflow, Terraform, etc) is a plus
- Experience in one or more of the following areas is a plus: machine learning, natural language processing, machine vision, recommendation systems, data pipeline architecture. Proven ability to independently define project requirements and ship products
