The Opportunity

Our mission is to support science and technology that will help make it possible to cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by the end of the century. Interdisciplinary teams of physicians, biologists, computational scientists, and engineers can expand our understanding of the human body and illness — the very science behind medicine. CZI fosters collaboration between scientists and engineers, develops tools and technologies, and builds support for basic scientific research.

Our Technology team in Science is seeking an experienced User Experience Researcher to conduct rigorous research on the Infectious Disease Sequencing (IDseq) tool, a collaboration between CZI and Dr. Joe DeRisi’s lab. This role will be responsible for designing and conducting rigorous research to answer the highest priority questions, including “full-stack” UX research focusing on foundational, strategic, generative, tactical, and evaluative questions. This role will split time between CZI’s Redwood City offices and the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub in San Francisco (Mission Bay).

You will

  • Design and execute rigorous, mixed-methods, human-centered research to better understand the attitudes, behaviors, and needs of scientists, researchers, and individuals relying on scientific data to do their jobs
  • Collaborate with and include product management, engineering, data science, and design on research that informs the directions and development of product solutions
  • Design and execute rigorous research that addresses the highest-priority questions in a human-centered way
  • Gather and convey insights in clear, compelling ways that evaluate hypotheses, inspire new ideas, and encourage design iteration
  • Run usability research for products and services - including on low and high-fidelity concepts, to inform ideas for solutions, product iterations, and launches
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to translate their curiosities into actionable research questions
  • Design and execute mixed-methods studies, using qualitative and quantitative methods where appropriate, to help your teams learn about scientists’ and researchers’ behaviors and attitudes   
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data and convey insights in clear, illustrative ways that help the team learn about scientific process, inspire product strategy, and encourage design iteration
  • Provide consultative input to external partners re: UX research, human-centered design, and the importance of getting feedback to iterate on ideas
  • Be willing to travel as needed (estimated 6-8 times per year)
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data and convey insights in clear, illustrative ways that help the team learn about the scientific process, inspire product strategy, and encourage design iteration
  • Typically spend 1-2 days a week at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub in Mission Bay (San Francisco) and travel - including internationally - for research purposes
  • Be flexible and willing to shift focus or direction as needed to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of the work underway
  • In your first year, you will
    • assist the IDseq/Biohub stakeholders in identifying users’ workflows, needs, pain points and bottlenecks, and work with the product team to translate those findings into product design/development solutions
    • collaborate with Biohub stakeholders to identify and prioritize research questions, develop and execute on a research plan to begin addressing them
    • educate stakeholders about UX research through involving them in the research process

    • successfully navigated relationships with stakeholders who may not be familiar with UX research or its value.
    • not been afraid to be scrappy, learn new areas, and think on their toes.
